Infection: Unsterile tattooing equipment and needles can transmit infectious diseases, such as hepatitis and skin infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus ("staph") bacteria*. Tattoos received at facilities not regulated by your state or at facilities that use unsterile equipment (or re-use ink) may prevent you from being accepted as a blood or plasma donor for twelve months.
Removal problems: Despite advances in laser technology, removing a tattoo is a painstaking process, usually involving several treatments and considerable expense. Complete removal without scarring may be impossible.
Allergic reactions: Although FDA has received reports of numerous adverse ractions associated with certain shades of ink in permanent makeup, marketed by a particular manufacturer, reports of allergic reactions to tattoo pigments have been rare. However, when they happen they may be particularly troublesome because the pigments can be hard to remove. Occasionally, people may develop an allergic reaction to tattoos they have had for years.
Keloid formation: If you are prone to developing keloids -- scars that grow beyond normal boundaries -- you are at risk of keloid formation from a tattoo. Keloids may form any time you injure or traumatize your skin.

A Dermatologist is known helping patients with skin issues that can occur from a tattoo!!

I used to be a tattoo artist and I have to agree with much of what has been said by Vcoolspice.
Considering your future career choices, I wouldn't get a tattoo on my hands.
Why do you want it? Are you trying to be the first to break a social barrier?
You have to ask yourself seriously why you want a tattoo and what does it mean to have it?
then do nothing about it for at least year. (this thing is going to be on you for the rest of your life.. one more year won't matter.)
Traditionally the tattoo is enriched in culture, status and meaning. I believe modern tattoos shouldn't be much different, even if the motive has changed.
FTR I wouldn't tattoo names of husbands, wives, lovers, or cartoon pictures.
but in the end it's your body.

Also, in your time as a tattoo artist, how rare was a 'incident' medical wise?

Husbands, Wives and Lovers can change... tattoos are there forever.
Cartoons are, for the majority of people, a fad.. quite often they are the work of mates on a bucks night.
There's always going to be some cases of infection... but it's usually from improper post tattoo care than for cross contamination. Other than the odd person coming back with a complaint for that, I was unaware of any major medical issues in the studio I worked at.
The most complaints we got were from people who thought getting tweety bird on their left shoulder was a good idea.

Though I am NOT condoning Tattoos....though I do have two myself ...but not on the knuckles !!
I personally would not have them on the knuckles !!...

Dude are those considered knuckles??? I would say knuckles are on the bony joints of the fingers not the straight spots of the fingers...
I don't like those though!
