Post by: Simulated on 08/08/2007 13:48:17
You know how people died from pneumonia (Thanks!) a long time ago, and now we have all this facny medicine that keeps them alive.

Would that be cheating death?

Thanks! Sim!

Not sure how you judge 'cheating death'?

In most early societies, the majority of the population would not have lived to 5 years of age, and of the remaining, only a very very small number would live to see 60 years of age.

The very act of building a fire, or wearing clothing, to keep out the cold of winter might be regarded as cheating death.

Where do you draw the line?

So everything I have asked in the last two weeks is all in a matter of opinion?

Sorry, where are we talking about everything you have asked in the last two weeks?

In reality, everything one knows, or believes on knows, must be provisional on judgements and assumptions one makes; so if we take it to the extreme, I suppose that can be said to be true of all of us.

All I was trying to understand is what were the judgements and assumptions you were making in asking this question.

After Death, Ghost, And this one they are all a matter of opinion.

And what made me ask it was I had it twice last year (the disease I mentioned in the orginal post). And I think that force wants me dead. LoL.

Why I was maybe a little wary of your question is, while it is perfectly valid to argue that you fought death, and won, but to argue that you cheated death would, to my mind, imply that in a fair fight death would have had every right to win, and you were somehow used unfair methods to deprive death of what was rightfully his.

I take the attitude that death will win in the end, but whatever tools I use to keep his victory at bay for as long as possible are fair means to use, and death has no rights to me until I have exhausted every trick I can find to stave him off.

Sorry, it was not my intent to deter you from asking, nor to confuse you.

You posed a question, and I tried to give my honest opinion regarding the question, as I saw it.  That should not mean that you should ever feel that you should not ask such questions.

You don't cheat Death, you just make Him wait a bit longer. This doesn't matter to Him because He has all the time in the world.
Seriously, every time I don't step out in front of a moving car I "cheat death", does it really mean anything?
