Title: Mosquito Tip
Post by: neilep on 20/07/2004 20:40:49
I heard this tip on the radio at some stupid hour this morning and thought it might be useful for all mosquito hating people (and other animals that have the ability to read and understand this too!)

When you have a mosquito and co enjoying a happy snack of blood, don't squish it, but flick it...the reason why, is because when you squish a mosqutio you can squeeze it's tummy contents into you and this can make you sickypoos !!.......well there you go, that's all I have to say about that.

Perhaps if anyone has any other mosquito related tips they can post them here too.

I'm sure most people know this, but eucalyptus oil is a good repellant.

could have done with some the other night, they love buzzing right past your ear when you're trying to sleep. but OK, I'll try not to splat it when i next see it.

i just read the newspaper equivalent of your radio 'tip' - pretty scary! they said a woman died from contracting a fungal infection through doing exactly what you described - squishing a mozzie and squeezing its stomacch contents into herself! uurggghhhh!

I've heard that eating bananas will attract mosquitos to you.  I've always figured that as small as their tube is, not much will get squished in in the time it takes my hand to smack them.  Besides if you flick it away, it'll just come back and then you have two bites.

does anyone know why some people are bit and others are not? i heard that it was something to do with body temperature. also when i was a kid we lived on a property in the middle of no-where (that is australia for those of you who dont know where no-where is[;)]). there were clouds of mozzies during the day in summer. we used to go sit in the creek to get away from them as it was only when you were totally submerged that you could garrantee that you would not get bit. unfortunately that meant that we usually got sucked on by leeches instead. [xx(]

however, when we first arrived i got bit loads, for about two years (when i was 8 or 9 or so)i was covered in red itchy bites. then i stopped reacting so much to the bites and now i am not the bite of preferance, YAY. i am living in cyprus now and there are mozzies here (though not so many) and i have found that they always go for almost anybody else in preference to me. this is also the case when i go back to australia so is not just that the cypriot mozzies have more developed tastebuds! why is this. do i now taste different because i was the local snack shop for so long?[:D]

any ideas would be greatly appreciated?

yes, but.........

well, the mozzies might not like foreign cuisine very much in cyprus ... ? hehe.

Jai, perhaps the Cypriot mozzies are a different strain to the Ozi ones...or it could just be that as you have ' ripened ' perhaps you taste different to what you tasted like as an 8 or 9 year old. I'm sure body chemistry is the answer here...I can't think of any other reason.....biology is the key......PLUS...I also understand that you have tattoos eh ?...maybe the mozzies are just sh_it scared now[:D][:D]

Actually, Jai...it's a shame you're not here in the UK  (North London) as I have a tattoo that needs fixing[:(]

LOL....yes , I am serious but do not want to put you out.....I had an awful TAT done a few years ago, it's just a small tribal design but it's fading and after it cleared up all the edges were undefined....I've been meaning to go and get it sorted, ie: changed and made more elaborate, there's also one of a spider that I found on the net that I must have...but seriously Jai....I don't want to mess with your schedule....(i'd even be prepared to come up to Notts, it's not that far)perhaps we can communicate nearer the time eh ?...thanks......I presume you are well covered eh ?...are you The Illustrated Woman ?....

i have a few........[:D], weeelllll, quite a few, and yes i would be happy to sortit all out. i have been tattooing for 6 years, lots of experience in graphic arts before that and have won a few awards. i know that that sounds like i am blowing my own trumpet but you have to be sure when you get a tattoo and knowing that your tattooist is good is part of that. i would also expect you to check out my portfolio before you go ahead.

by the way, do you know anyone who designs web sites? i need to get one up and running.

thanks

I do know a web designer, though it has been a long time since I spoke to him and I have no idea what he charges but here is the link to his own website http://www.3dhead.co.uk/ As far as I know he tends to work for commercial entities and corporations but...there you go....failing that, I'm sure the wonderful generous lovely people here can put you in the right direction........if all else fails then there are quite a few software packages out there to get you up and running and quite a few web based companies who offer web facilities   such as http://www.register.com/wsn/index.cgi?  , http://secure.srnow.net/srnow/clickstart.php?source=G19Rweb--pages   ' http://2-minute-website.com/?src=G-UK-04cand there's always YAHOO....it's free http://uk.geocities.yahoo.com/ ...but I can't vouch for any of them

Regarding the tattoo....I already trust you...but would love to see your portfolio at some time and appreciate the fact that you would expect me to see it.

Thanks Jai and good luck.

Do you believe that???

Never heard that one before Trang, I congratulate you on your English (it's a lot better than my Vietnamese) but when you say 'Hang on a nylon that contains fresh water in front of your windows or doors' do you mean, a bag made of nylon filled with water ?

i had visions of nylon stockings hanging in doors and windows and flapping in the breeze. a little like the old flypaper rolls. urgh!!! they were scary. all those dead little flys just stuck there, some still waving their arms! one of the worst jobs i had as a kid was to get up early in the morning during autum and drown all the flys. when it was cold at night they would land and then get so cold they would not be able to move so i had to go around with a bowl of water and a dustpan brush and brush them off all the surfaces into the bowl where they would drown. fly soup! To neilep: It's a bag made of nylon. You're right.
( my English is better? Thanks![:)]

For some reason, i seem to be a bug attractor in general. Whenever i go back to China, I get bit by mosquitos way more than anyone else does, and the bites swell up to larger bumps than everyone else too! And when i went camping on a school trip a few year ago, there were midges absolutely everywhere on the campsite. They chose to bite me far more frequently than everyone else, the bites swelled up and in the end i looked like i had measles or something. Bites on my head, arms, legs, you name it. Everyone else hardly got bitten at all - including the people who shared my tent!

I'm not being rude but do your feet smell, when you take your shoe's off do people head for the door[:D]

I heard that mosquito's home in on two things.

Our breath and our feet. apparently the bacteria on our feet replicate the odour of a pherimone or something which mosquito's simply love[:p]

PS if your feet are of the non smelly variety, I APPOLOGISE[:D]

what the hell,i appologise anyway.

Hi folks living in the tropics, here in OZ, well we get a few of the Mozzies, but there about 6 different types, the most effective repellant is the simple old electric fan, they do not like wind apparently it burns them.
But I have noticed, that if one eats seafood, they seem more attracted to you, I went down to our Primary industries dept, and dicussed traps with them, they said the use of CO2 (frozen) in a little breather, and a small LED strobe was also helpful, the trap is essentially like a tent with 2 chambers whereby they get in, but the entrance is lower than the light source, they cleave to the light and die of exhaustion.
