Energy is just mass in a different state. Just like steam is water in a different state. Energy has many forms as its frequency alters and so does matter or mass. As energy (condenses) into matter it goes through various stages. Quarks/Electrons/Protons etc are all simply names given to a points along the road from energy to mass. Energy itself always remains as matter but cannot be percieved as such because the dynamics of the space time it creates around itself defies detection via the means we have to comprehend its presence or reality.

There really is no such thins as "pure energy". What we consider "energy" is actually the difference of pressure of some sorts. - some electrons are in one place and there is an absence of electrons in another place, then a current can flow .. for example.
