Chupacabras
                            (https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi48.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff238%2Frayhinton56%2Fchupa2.jpg&hash=94819cae30922ef13a7b4648d75bca36)

Chupacabra means Goat Sucker. The Chupacabra or Chupacabras is a creature said to inhabit parts of the Americas. It is associated particularly with Puerto Rico, where it was first reported, and Mexico. The name, which translates literally from Spanish as "goat-sucker", comes from its reported habit of attacking and drinking the blood of livestock.

Physical descriptions of the creature vary. Sightings began in Puerto Rico in the early 1990s, and have since been reported as far north as the Carolinas and as far south as Chile.Though some argue that the chupacabra may be a real creature, mainstream scientists and experts generally contend that the chupacabra is a legendary creature, or a type of urban legend.

History

The legend of los Chupacabras began in about 1992, when Puerto Rican newspapers El Vocero and El Nuevo Dia began reporting the killings of many different types of animals, such as birds, horses, and, as its name implies, goats. At the time it was known as El Vampiro de Moca since some of the first killings occurred in the small town of Moca. While at first it was suspected that the killings were done randomly by some members of a satanic cult, eventually these killings spread around the island, and many farms reported loss of animal life. The killings had one pattern in common: each of the animals found dead had two punctured holes around their necks.

The term "chupacabra" was supposedly coined by Puerto Rican television personality Silverio Perez, who intended the name to be a joke, although the word had already been used in Michael Crichton's 1990 novel Jurassic Park, so it seems likely that there is an earlier origin.

Soon after the animal deaths in Puerto Rico, other animal deaths were reported in other countries, such as the Dominican Republic, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, El Salvador, Panama, Peru, Brazil, the United States and, most notably, Mexico. Both in Puerto Rico and Mexico, El Chupacabras gained urban legend status.

Chupacabras stories began to be released several times in American and Hispanic newscasts across the United States, and chupacabras merchandise, such as t-shirts and baseball hats, was sold.

The chupacabras is generally treated as a product of mass hysteria, though the animal mutilations are sometimes real. Like many cases of such mutilations, however, it's been argued that they are often not as mysterious as they might first appear.

Sightings

Certain South American rain forest natives believe in the "mosquito-man", a mythical creature of their folklore that pre-dates modern chupacabras sightings. The mosquito-man sucks the blood from animals through his long nose, like a big mosquito. Some say mosquito-man and chupacabras are one and the same.

Notable sightings in the United States include one reported by multiple eye-witnesses in Calaveras County, California, and at a recent birthday celebration of a Development Team member of a local charity in Houston, Texas. According to these reports, the creature was sighted for the first time in the early to middle 1990s, harming animals of different species - although it is now thought that people did this themselves.

In July of 2004, a rancher near San Antonio, Texas, killed a hairless, dog-like creature (the Elmendorf Creature) that was attacking his livestock. It was later determined to be a coyote with demodectic mange.

In October of 2004, two animals which closely resemble the Elmendorf creature were observed in the same area. The first was dead, and the second was noticed by a local zoologist who was called to identify the animal while she was travelling to the location where the first was found. Specimens were studied by biologists in Texas; the creatures are thought to have been canines with skin problems and facial deformities.

El Chupacabra has often been spotted in Michigan, but it is unknown if the Chupacabra could even survive such winters. A recent sighting of a Chupacabra was in Grand Haven, Michigan. A fourty-two year old man said he saw it suck the blood out of a cat.

A famous appearance in the city of Varginha, Brazil, is sometimes attributed to the chupacabras. However, most people associate that being with extraterrestrials, rather than a chupacabras. In 1997, many cases were reported in Brazilian newspapers.

Another sighting in Brazil comes from a police officer, who claimed to get a nauseous feeling when he saw a dog-like chupacabra in a tree.

Supposed appearance
(https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi48.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff238%2Frayhinton56%2Fchupacabrateeth.jpg&hash=0f9f0885fc2b55c35dfcf3b8427fb4bd)

Chupacabras are said to prominently appear in three specific forms.

The first and most common: a lizard-like being, appearing to have leathery or scaly greenish-gray skin and sharp spines or quills running down its back. It stands approximately 3-4 feet high, and stands and hops in a similar fashion as a kangaroo (in at least one sighting, the creature hopped 20 feet). This variety is said to have a dog or panther-like nose and face, a forked tongue protruding from it, large fangs, and is said to hiss and screech when alarmed, as well as to leave a sulfuric stench behind.

The second variety also stands and hops as a kangaroo, and it has coarse fur with greyish facial hair. The head is similar to a dog's, and its mouth has large teeth.

The third form is simply that of a strange breed of wild dog that is mostly hairless, has a pronounced spinal ridge, unusually pronounced eye sockets, teeth, and claws, but is otherwise a typical canine. This animal is said to be the result of interbreeding between several populations of wild dogs, though enthusiasts claim that it might be an example of a dog-like reptile.

                               (https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi48.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff238%2Frayhinton56%2Fchupa1004.jpg&hash=5244cd13d93fbc99ede301bafc8e9a0b)

The account during the year 2000 in Nicaragua of a chupacabras corpse being found supports the conclusion that it is simply a strange breed of wild dog. The alleged corpse of the animal was found in Tolapa, Nicaragua, and forensically analyzed at UNAN-Leon. Pathologists at the University found that it was just an unusual-looking dog. It should be noted that there are very striking morphological differences between different breeds of dogs (which wild dogs are generally descended from) that easily account for the strange characteristics of such an animal.

Some say the chupacabras' red eyes have the ability to hypnotize and paralyze their prey - the prey animal is mentally stunned, allowing the chupacabras to suck the animal's blood at its leisure. The effect is similar to the bite of the vampire bat or certain snakes or spiders that stun their prey with venom. Unlike conventional predators, the chupacabras sucks all the animal's blood (and sometimes organs) through a single hole or two holes.

Naming convention

The creature is known as both "chupacabras" and "chupacabra" throughout the Americas, with the former probably being the original word, and the latter a regularization of it. The name can be preceded by the masculine definite article ("el chupacabras"), which means "the goat-sucker" in Spanish.

"Chupacabra" Shot in Texas

October 2004 - Earthfiles - Linda Moulton Howe

Pollok, Texas - What are the strange, unidentified grey-blue animals that people keep seeing ? and shooting ? in Texas? Back in May this year, Elmendorf, Texas farmer, Devin McAnally, shot an animal eating mulberries that he also thought was killing his chickens. Devin was amazed that his bullets did not cause bleeding on the strange, grey body.

I had investigated the "chupacabras" mystery on a trip to Puerto Rico in 1996. Many locals described a grey-colored kangaroo-like creature with long teeth which was blamed for hundreds of punctures in chickens, rabbits and other farm animals, including some goats and dogs that were still alive after bloodless holes had been made in their forehead bone or neck. Chupa = sucker and cabra = goat.

At the time, I talked about the Elmendorf photographs with a San Antonio Zoo spokesman who said it was definitely not a coyote, but he did not know what it was. Some of the Elmendorf tissue was shipped to the University of California-Davis Veterinarian Genetics Laboratory for DNA analysis and results are pending.

Now we've got both another dead animal that closely resembles the Elmendorf creature and a sighting of one of the creatures alive only one-quarter mile away from the site where this animal was shot on October 8. It was at the Pollok, Texas, home of the Womack family. Mrs. Womack's daughter, Stacey Womack, lives twenty miles away in Lufkin where she worked for 20 years as a vet technician and three years in the early 1990s as a zoo keeper at the Ellen Trout Zoo in Lufkin. Today she is a dog breeder. Stacey has a lot of experience with animals around Lufkin and Pollok and could not understand what her mother meant when she called Tracey in a very emotional state on Friday afternoon, October 8, asking her daughter to come help because there was a strange animal under the house.

Interview: Stacey Womack, dog breeder and former veterinarian tech assistant, Lufkin, Texas: "My mother was just sort of hysterical because they had killed something under the house and they did not know what it was. I thought, 'This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.' They don't know whether it's a coyote or a dog?!

I told my mother I would come out there and bring my digital camera. About one-quarter mile from my mother's house, I had to hit my breaks because an animal crossed the road in front of me and it was running with its head down and its tail down and it did not have any hair. It was a strange looking sight and my daughter-in-law was with me and she wanted to know if it was a wolf. I told her it wasn't a wolf and it was too large for a fox.

So, we went on to my mother's house and went around to the back and there was the same animal an animal identical to what ran across the road. It was on the ground after they had just killed it and there was almost no blood. It was just red where the shot had went in (the eye). I was just totally dumbfounded when I saw it. At first glance, you would think of a deer's head on a kangaroo's body. The ears were real thick and large. It did not have any hair on it. The skin tissue was necrotic. It was just awful. I did not know what it was.

i found this if its any help [:D] [:D]

No Ray,

It seems a particular affliction here. Even the female of the species seem to be affected by it but I do not wish to be construed as being against that.

Actually, it is rather nice where I live - sub-tropical, good water limestone hills with up to 1000 ft relief. further west you get into the Sonroan Desert with the Great Plains to th north and that is the area most think of as Texas. What most people, even Texans do not realize, is that the state is BIG. It is 10.5 degrees of latitude from north to south (700 miles) and 12+ degress of longitude wide (970 miles). North texas is like Kansas, south Texas like Mexico, west Texas like Arizona and east Texas like the swamp and timberland of Louisiana. If you are Schitsoid, it is the place to be.

There was an article in the Arizona Daily Star (www.azstarnet.com) recently about sightings, showing photographs, and I believe reporting actual carcasses of the chupacabra recently discovered, but I was not able to locate the information on the web site. Perhaps the article appeared more than one week ago.

Post by: Tatitu on 07/12/2010 15:42:16
Hello, I'm new at this forum. I'm from Puerto Rico and I have to say a few things. First, according a  book belongs to my father published in 1923, the word goatsucker were used to refer to an animal that kill cows and goats in New Mexico. The animal is unknown and the attacks were reported before 1923.

In Puerto Rico, attacks were reported since 1971 and maybe before in a town name Moca.

Similar attacks were repoted in all Central america, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Costa Rica and South America in Colombia and Venezuela. There are also reports from Dominican Republic, New Mejico, Texas, and other states of the US.

Many people think that this is an urban legend but I know persons who had animals that were attacked and killed by this animal or whatever it is. Those attacks have no regularity, and there is no special time in the year, can occur whatever and whenever, but usually in countryside areas, not in cities or crowd places.

As a matter of fact, for many many people this a joke but certainly the animals attacked by the chupacabras have no blood in the body and present only two or three round holes in any part of the body near a big vein or artery. The holes are perfectly round and seems to be burned in the edge.

Another curiosity is that in the places where the victims are found, no sign of violence or defense of the victim is shown. No spreading blood at all or mess. No other open wounds or scratches. In the town of Barceloneta in Puerto Rico an attack reported showed more than 30 hens killed, and many of them were still in branches of the tree where they were sleeping.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chupacabra

"Biologists and wildlife management officials view the chupacabras as a contemporary legend.

In July 2010, a chupacabra-like creature was reported killed, but found to be a coyote with a severe parasite infection. In October of that year, University of Michigan scientists theorised that parasite-riddled coyotoes (specifically the parasites responsible for scabies and mange) were likely the basis for the chupacabra legend."
