Title: Deep heat makes stomach contract
Post by: ereader on 06/06/2009 12:27:40
I've found that whenever I have been somewhere hot for a while e.g. sunbathing, hot bath, sauna, when my body reaches a stage where the heat has penetrated deep to my bones, I have what feels like a reflex spasm in my stomach muscles.  Why should that happen and has anyone else experienced this as I've never seen it mentioned anywhere?

I guess it might be compared to high intensity exercise, so extra stomach acid secreted in these situations can contribute to gastrointestinal distress.

No actually, I've found a better one:

Quote
Cramp in the abdominal or skeletal muscles brought on by hard physical exertion in extremely high temperatures (e.g., in miners, stokers, or firemen) because of loss of salt from the body during profuse perspiration can last for hours or days if untreated. Such cramps are considered to be a type of heat exhaustion.
Heat exhaustion, condition caused by overexposure to sunlight or another heat source and resulting in dehydration and salt depletion, also known as heat prostration. The symptoms are severe headaches, weakness, dizziness, blurred vision, and sometimes unconsciousness.
A cool atmosphere and the replacement of salt and water orally or intravenously is required, and application of heat is not recommended. Heat cramps in persons who do heavy labor can be prevented by the addition of salt to drinking water or by taking salt tablets.
