It was probably a small baguette (my favorite)...or a small Emerald Cut !..

yes Pink diamonds are rare....but you can get them stained too....but I would never really want anything less than a white diamond.......getting a colored one , to me, defeats the object....you may as well get another precious jewel that is naturally that colour also..........in MY opinion....No offense to LO who I know has a black diamond !!

No not all mam.......there are naturally diamonds of all colours..pink, blue, black etc.......but then you are limited to the choice of hues and tones.but YES.....they are beautiful and VERY rare !!!

If you are are piccky then you can choose to have a white diamond artificially stained and then you can choose the colour of your choice.

I hope moccacake does not mind the change of route this thread has taken.

They're all lovely, but...just call me plain Jane.  White diamonds have always been my favorite stone.  They make me feel all warm and fuzzy. [:)]

Just a plain old white diamond for me... preferably a 2ct. marquis cut on a platinum band with two baquette cut diamonds flanking either side of the rock.

but I'm not picky or anything....

the marquis shape is my favorite but really tiny.. That baguette is pretty, but I have only really seen a couple rings with that shape of a stone.. I love the heat, but prefer Marquis and Love diamonds any old way but must say I really like the geen one alot, as I have never seen one before!Green is me favorite color. If I were to buy a ring I would buy a plain Diamond as it would go with anything I wore as far as color is concerned. If I had money to spare I would splurge on the green Diamond because it would go against my more practial nature! It is good color!!

The family of a Blackpool man who died suddenly shunned traditional memorials in favour of a novel alternative - turning him into a diamond.

Mick Egan died of a brain haemorrhage last year and his wife of 30 years, Susan, wanted a fitting memorial.

The stone took 24 weeks to create but was completed in time for her daughter Celeste's wedding - allowing her to go down the aisle with her father.

"We think he would have loved the idea," she told BBC News.

The family wanted a unique way to remember Mr Egan and turned to an American company to create the synthetic diamond.

The process involves extracting carbon from the ashes of a loved one, before heating it to extreme temperatures to convert it into graphite.

Rough diamond crystal is then created in the special presses before being cut to the family's specifications.

"We had to have a blue one because my husband's eyes are blue. I never visualised that it would be so beautiful until it arrived," said Mrs Egan.

"He is my diamond geezer now.

"It was the right thing to do and it just brings me so much comfort that I've got it now to last forever.

"He loved being the centre of attention. He could light a room up when he walked in it.

"In some respects the diamond lights up, which is a memory of how he was."

The completed diamond arrived the day before Celeste Egan was married - giving her the chance to walk down the aisle with her father.

"It was emotional but it was nice emotion because I was pleased that it had happened and that I could have something of my Dad to take down the aisle with me," she said.

"It seemed like the right thing to do for us as a family and for my Dad - we think he would have loved the idea."

It is unusual because the technology for it is quite new (what we were talking about on another thread about the ever advancing technology for synthetic diamonds).

Yes.. As a young-un, I really do not see the point in "diamonds" [:P] They are expensive, small, but pretty, which I can agree to [;D]

My parents have all white, and I like white best out of those colours. But, Neil, that blue shiny turquoisey one is soooooo lovely!

Hmm.. $400 dollars isn't alot.. But then again, the dollars are usually transferred straight to pounds, so everything in the UK is about 2 times expensiver than the US~! It's not fair lol. All the games console such as ps3, are like $400 in the US, and its about 400 pounds in the UK, which means about 2 times more. [:o]

And I really love that blue diamond!

oooh..it depends on a lot of things....the colour, the clarity, the size !!...LOL...but...a bog standard price just for the diamond above 0.3 carat (about 8mm in length) would be circa  £700-£1000...it's difficult to be precise !!

The thing is  me young  laddio...the bigger the diamond the far far more expensive it is....a 4 carat is not twice the price of a two carat diamond...it's probably about 6-10 times the price.. the bigger they are...the rarer they are.

small diamonds for instance...those of only a single millimeter are about £3-£5...whereas a 2mm diamond is about £25 !

As long as it's good quality, I love 'em.  In fact, I feel much more comfortable wearing a fake versus a $15,000.00 ring.  I have a few pairs of earrings that have the large real stones.  I hardly wear them for fear of losing them (which I've done once or twice and nearly had heart failure).

Lol.. My mum's done that before. She lost it whilst showering in a gym or something. Looked for ages around the floor, but never found it! She blamed it on the lack of "sticking" to the metal. [;D]

I'm with ya on that.  I could not imagine spending that kind of money on jewelry.  That was the price to set it in platinum, I was so stunned I forgot to ask him about white gold.  At least with the fake, I can get the matching necklace, earrings and bracelet too. [;D]

conflict diamonds are illegal to sell, i think they come from areas of africa that as the name suggests are at war with themselves or a neighbour.

conflict diamonds help pay for more weapons so the buggers can keep figghting, or line the pockets of officials. but neil may know more.

I would keep the ring depending on the circumstances of such a gift.. romantic, business etc.. It would all depend. If buying it just for buying... I really don't know of coarse it would also depend on what it looked like for sure.HECK I have no need for a ten thousand dollar diamond when a 10'00 one could mean just as much if not more!

OHHH blood diamonds .. gosh neily I did not know that sort of thing really still went on..Yuckk.. War and fighting suck!

War is an expensive business.  If it is not diamands, then it is oil - same idea - you need to sell something to pay your soldiers to keep on killing.

LOL. I would buy it, then sell it for $9,000,000 on Ebay. [:P] But with a reserve of $8,000,000 ofcourse!

The trouble is that if you have a higher reserve it will increase the commission charged.

Hi all.. Sorry, I was busy [;D]

Oh, how much would the commission charge be for $8m?

Actually, it took quite some time to work out the actual fees charged, but it is not that bad.

The actual charge will be 1.17% of the closing price for everything above £600 (there are higher percentages for the first £600, but in £8m, so little of the charge will be incurred within the first £600 that it does not matter).  Thus, the commission on a successful sale for £4,000,000 would be under £50,000.

The charge on the reserve price is only £2 if the item sells, but is more if the item does not sell.  If the item does not sell, then there is a charge of 2% of the reserve price, but that is capped at £100, so it makes no difference if you have a reserve price of £5,000 (which will cost £102 for a no-sale) or £5,000,000 (which will also cost £102 for a no sale).

Yes, but that is for a successful sale for £4,000,000; so that still leaves over £3,950,000 in your pocket.

It is only if you make a no-sale that you have to concern yourself with being £105 out of pocket.

Yes, but 50,000 is still enough to afford a new car, or a flat!

And, when you sell something expensive on ebay, do you get taxes reduced from your money?

You'd be hard put to find a flat anywhere in England but in a most deprived area for as little as £50,000 these days.

And, when you sell something expensive on ebay, do you get taxes reduced from your money?

It depends upon whether you are making a business out of it.

If you regularly sell on ebay, you will need to pay taxes (and, I would imagine, if you do enough of it, may have to pay VAT); but a single sale, you will not have to pay income tax or VAT.  Whether you might need to pay capital gains tax is something I am not sure of (this is rarely a matter most people concern themselves with because you are allowed to make £6,000 profit a year before making capital gains tax, and most people making more that £6,000 profit on ebay are anyway making a business out of it, so would have to pay tax on the business).

Selling some personal property (such as the house you live in) will not incur capital gains tax, no matter what the profit.  Selling something you do not use (e.g. a home you have not lived in, or even your second home) can incur capital gains tax.  If you had a diamond ring that you had used as you personal jewelery for 5 years before selling it might possibly be regarded as different than selling a diamond ring that you had just been given and never used.

I am not a tax expert, so I cannot say exactly what the situation would be in this hypothetical case, only to raise some of the possibilities that might have to be taken into consideration.

I choose number one as this would be unusual as I love sapphires....but this one is very unusual though...I prefer uniqueness~!

Darn, I have to admit I like the second one!

Is it true that you can easily tell a fake diamond from a real one by holding it under a strong light for a while. If its fake it should glow for a short while after the light has been switched off, I think!
Needs to be done in a dark room me thinks.

But as I have no diamonds, real or fake, I cant try it...anyone?

How strong of a light and for how long?

Hmm.. I assume a few minutes, like 2-3 minutes under a light bulb or something. But the more time it is under, then the brighter the glow would be. Could you try it for us Carolyn? And tell us the results. [;D] I'm really curious. [;D] Oh. Take a picture too, without the flash! [;D] If that's possible, that is. [;D]

Or does it work with other fake diamond materials ?
