photon shoots thru diamond & phonom vibration is created thus reducing the frequency of the photon upon exiting the diamond? What happens to the residual phonom?

The phonon is a pseudo-particle that is invoked to describe the motion of a parcel of vibrational energy that remains coherent as it moves through a perfectly crystalline region of material. Its eventual fate is a typical 2nd Law fate: the coherence is gradually or suddenly lost as the phonon encounters defects and dislocations or crystal surfaces, and its energy degrades as its coherent motions become random thermal motions.

A photon is a quanta of energy, and a phonon is described as a quanta of vibrational energy. Which is real and which is fake? Maybe both? This universe seems to offer two interpretations, waves and quanta. Which one is more real I don't know. I'm expecting both to exist myself. And that it will be your experiment, added with the way you formulate/set up your question that will define what you measure.

Could one not consider a quantum (particle) simply as a wave that has been compressed to its limit?

No Bill, the wave describes the particle but when you are standing far enough away you cannot see the waves just the general outline of the wave packet which IS the particle
