Title: Who's not going to drink with X-mass dinner?
Post by: Eric A. Taylor on 22/12/2010 03:27:19
Chris asked if anyone would avoid alcohol with Christmas Dinner....Well there are quite a lot of Mormons in Briton, and while some Mormons do drink most don't.

I think the more important group would be Methodists (20 times more than Mormons) - I don't know about present day Methodists but Wesley preached against alcohol and was very pro-temperance.

Sean, I ask out of curiosity not to criticise at all, why do you not drink alcohol?  Is it moral, religious, ethical, medical, some other reason, or a combination?  I do drink (perhaps to excess sometimes); it's a conscious decision (ie not just peer pressure) because I like the mental relaxation, the physical fuzziness etc.

I think it's something to do with proximity to the North Pole. Sean is long way from there.

I grew up in the Mormon Church but do not practice it today (my parents are were both "converts" in the early 70's and still very into church they even teach Sunday school. I do drink, in extreme moderation. Maybe just 3 or 4 drinks a year.

Sean may have any number of reasons for abstaining that are, quite frankly none of our business.

Sean could be an alcoholic, or he may simply just not like the taste of it. What does it matter to you if he doesn't drink. Just look to him for a ride home.

Nice effort to make the thread sound like a science Q there Eric!
X-mass!  What's that the mass of Planet-X (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planets_beyond_Neptune)? [:D]

I imagine our Muslim contributors won;t be partaking in the Demon drink either during this holiday period.

If Sean doesn't want to answer then that is his choice and I did make it clear I was just curious and not critical at all.  The spirit of scientific investigation is to gain understanding in areas that one lacks knowledge - I was interested in his reasons if Sean wished to share them.

I suspect that most of our Muslim contributors won't be having Christmas lunch.

Their loss. But they're welcome round mine to see how it should be done, if they change their minds...

Just thought it was kind of a personal question. Just before the American Mid-term election a campaigner came knocking. He asked me who I planned to vote for, which I thought very rude (I was planing on voting for the other person).

Eric, mostly from a desire not to be an obnoxious drunk, as well as living in an area where there were 4 local attractions, all of them being pubs. My neighbour had a severe drink problem, he used the barman as his bank, giving him all his money to manage. He would drink a bottle a night after the pub closed, though he was prohibited from buying at the local bottlestores. I had colleagues who would go on binge drinking sessions, and I was not going to turn into them, thus I do not drink.

The reason for no reply is that I was very busy the last few days, and was not using a computer much, plus reinstalling/upgrading the computer and restoring data has kept me busy.

I like sweetwines Luke the Jewish Passover wines...and that's it in a nutshell.. I am also a member of the church of
JESUS CHRIST OF LATTERDAY SAINTS..WHO TEACH MODERATION AND GENERALLY DO NOT DRINK...BUT THAT VARIES ON EVERYINDIVIDUAL PERSON AND NOT CHURCH ORDINANCES.. Sorry my caps stuck and am on my mobile..not yelling intended...LOL. Anyway no liquor for me at dinner although my children all partake as individuals.

Does Sparkling Cider count?

There wasn't a drop of alcohol on our Christmas Table.

Did I miss New Years too?
