Title: Risperdal
Post by: shellywelly on 14/12/2003 19:07:42
I am taking risperdal 4mg for 6 months.  But I still got symptoms of paranoia in crowds/groups.  Feel people are looking at me watching or talking about me.  So they put it up to 6 mg.  I have been on 6 mg for one week and today I went to the city and got bad paranoia.  Should i give up on this drug and try something new?

Hi shellywelly, welcome to the forum.  Have you tried vitamins to balance your system?  In your shoes I'd take massive doses of B vitamins and calcium.  You also need magnesium and vitamin D to be able to utilize calcium.

Way off topic, but I had a Risperdal pen for a while.  You know, the type of pens that drug companies make with new drugs printed on them to give away to doctors hopefully in return for some business.  It was the best disposable pen I over owned and the only pen I've ever actually used until the ink ran dry.  I miss that pen.

I was under the impression that Risperdal is an anti-psychotic.  Strange they'd prescribe that for paranoia, but then again, I am not a medical professional.  (yet)

It's a silly idea taking extra vitamins unless you lack in them !!!!! They'll go straight through your body without doing anything !!!

Excess water soluble vitamins are passed right through our bodies, no harm done.  On the other hand, some people require higher levels of vitamins and minerals than others and a lack of those nutrients can create imbalances.  The quality of our food supply has diminished dramatically in the last 100 years, so it makes sense to supplement.

There is a variance in the quality of nutritional supplements.  To be sure you get good product, go with a well established manufacturer with a good reputation.

Not only has the quality of our food supply diminished, but people tend to eat less healthy foods  like fresh fruits and vegetables, leading to mild malnutrition.  Try drinking more water, too, if you don't already.  Chronic dehydration does really bad things to your body and mind.  I get all crazy in the head (anxiety, headaches, nervousness) when I don't drink enough water.

I get those when I don't drink enough water as well. I do prefer my water with some yeast and hops added though. Mmmmm beer.

It's a stupid idea to supplement, the only reason you'd need it is because you eat crap processed food instead of fruit and vegetables and meat. If you take a decent diet you don't need them. Spending money on supplements is the dumbest idea there is unless you actually have a problem and lack in them.

Don't be so fast to judge, please QC.  In some areas, it's cheaper to buy vitamins than it is to buy fresh vegetables.  Some people do not like fruits and vegetables.  Some people can't eat much fruit because they're diabetic.  Some people have such busy lives that they don't have time to prepare healthy meals for themselves.  Don't be so quick to call something "stupid" simply because it's not the choice you would personally make.

robert:  Lack of water also affects motor skills and logical / mathematical reasoning.  Sucking down water along with your coffee before a big exam or project is highly recommended.  But damn if beer isn't a lovely temptress.

Quite funny that quantumcat abbreviated is QC - "Queen's Council" - the term reserved for barristers ! Not quite judges, but close.

I would think that they don't have QC's in the USA and when Charles or William take the reins, they'll all have to change their business cards to KC's. Almost sounds like a fast food place, and when you were not happy with them you could refer to them as King's Flocking Counsels or KFC's.
Again, Chris, you are referring to the street sweepers not the guys in wigs.
And Cannabinoid, I do drink unflavoured water, normally in the AM and/or while at work. It's pretty common knowledge these days that a couple of litres of water a day does provide substantial benefits to overall well being, but I read recently that it doesn't have to be in it's purest form. Water in beer or coffee and tea can be counted towards the couple of litres consumed.

So Roberth, you're counselling Cannabinoid not to be chicken and give in to his hopfull temptress?

Not counselling so much as advising the beneficial properties.

I've always been told (by medical professionals no less) that liquids don't really count as water if they're not pure water.  I know alcohol and caffeine are diuretics, so they probably serve to decrease the net water content of your body when you drink beer, tea, or coffee; at least until you become VERY dehydrated and your body goes into water conservation mode.

I still have to force myself to drink regular water anyway.  I don't enjoy drinking it, I just know that I need to.

Try a slice of lemon or lime in your glass.  Adds that little something.

I just read on another message board of one girl who conquered her social phobia by taking excess of Vitamin B6.

Shelly, a lack of iron seriously affects my mood, obviously check with your pharmacist before you take anything in addition to your medication but an iron supplement always helps me.  Alternatively, a couple of pints of Guinness, not sure on the genuineness of the 'Guinness is good for you' slogan but seems to work for me.

Call your doctor and tell him it isn't working. I have always believed that schizophrenia is a biochemical imbalance, and there are better medications to treat paranoia than Risperdal.

Hi Shelley,
 check with a nutrionist?

e.g. http://www.yournutrition.co.uk/health_problems/depression_m.htm

These guys are in England and there is a bit about Pyroluria on this page. You can phone them.

The generic name for Risperdal is risperidone. It is one of the most widely used atypical antipsychotics. I think it is also the no. 1 agent currently in use in America. You will, without doubt, be able to get it in Australia.

Just my two cents on the topic...

I used to do work with high risk/violent youth, one of which was on a daily medication of resperidone 3x daily. Although the dosages were lower in their case due to age, we supplemented his diet with high end supplements and noticed a marked improvement in behavioral instances within the first weeks.

I would just like to say that while many people have different stances on the role of supplementation, I am a strong believer.

General science and the medical community is sloooowly starting to come around in realizing the benefits of supplementation as well. (JAMA - http://www.humannutrition.com/JAMARecommendsSupplements.php )

I believe you're right. If you stumble across any journals or articles stating trials please pass along the info.

Haven't read much on that since my hyperactive stepson grew up.  There was also emphasis on food additives causing allergies, hence, the Feingold Diet which was all about limiting foods with certain additives that made hyperactives worse.  Even got down to added dyes in medicines.
