What has happened to Scientific American?

Over the past several years I have noticed a general "dumbing down" of Scientific American. That once leader in American newsstand science rags seems to have retreated from the well researched, well written realm of the credible.
If this is true, what does that say about not only our educational system, but our society as a whole?
Thoughts?

Scientific American was intended to be a public-friendly publication for the scientifically aware.
- They now publish some podcasts with science news and some more in-depth interviews
New Scientist was aimed at the same general market, but more news-oriented, and with shorter articles.
I mostly listen to podcasts these days, as I can commute or exercise and listen at the same time. It's harder to exercise with a paper medium.

Although by no means Dumbing down Nature while still publishing the most esoteric articles it is also publishing more reader friendly stuff for the non specialist
