Whittling things from bits of wood is inexpensive, and also a pleasant way to spend time. Also, collect stones from rivers and beaches and polish them up for jewelery etc. Doing your own paintings and drawings is also inexpensive, or make up collages using bits of material. You could do a photo picture made up from old photos in an old frame. Or buy olive oil and put some into attractive small bottles with herbs / garlic / chilies etc. These make good presents too, and you could combine them with flavoured vinegars, say white wine vinegar with tarragon. Cheap vodka with orange or lemon for flavour is also easy, and you can make it go further by mixing it with a sugar-water solution.

I'm sure I've got some more ideas somewhere!

Those are great ideas..... Thank you.. I can use all you have .....

lol...When I was about ten.... I carved a wooden bell from an old rewood tree that came down next to my house... I was so proud of  it. The  bell was really  so pretty so I presented it to my mom for Christmas... and she put it on the counter for everyone to view, and over the next 6 monthes or so... her bell crumbled into a zillion pieces... I guess thats why the old Widow Maker came crashing down.. and was so easy to carve...Lol.....

Back to the thread. Put cookie mix in layers into a big jar that seals at the top. Fasten some christmas material on the lid with a ribbon. Write out the recipe for the cookies on the back of one of last years christmas cards. Fasten this on the jar with somw ribbon.

Thanks Rd.....I will make some gingerbread boys... great Idea...... thanks for th site...

Isn't that slightly macabre, having the family hung in effigy on the Christmas tree ?.

I was thinking of shapes to match each persons interests e.g. basketball shape, American football shape, NASCAR shape, etc.
or identical shapes (e.g. stars) each marked with a person's name (in icing / cake-decorations / pinpoint depressions).

I make my own table crackers out of the cut down tube from a roll of Xmas wrapping paper and coloured tissue paper.

I put in a small pack of sweets, a pen and a plastic novelty (about £1 each from one of those strange 'wonder' type shops or a Poundshop) and, of course, my own silly joke.

Then in the girls crackers I put flashing earrings and a small summat or other from Claire's (makeup, hair band, vanity mirror, the choice is almost endless) and I buy a sampler selection box of perfumes from Boots which can be split to put 1 or 2 in each cracker. The girls love these to keep in their handbag.

For the boys, I put in a flashing badge and a keyring torch, bottle opener, screwdriver or summat to that effect and again a cologne or 2 from a Boots sampler pack.

We've done that with muffins this year, as well as a mulled wine kit (a bottle of red wine and a gauze bag with all the spices in).

I don't know how much a dime is!  Mars bar cake is good, you can cut into small squares, put it in a greaseproof bag with a pretty ribbon on it.
