So I'd assume the lot of you are on the computer alott. AND I'd assume you have a popup/spam problem to, have you downloaded any FREE popup blockers you could reccomend? I swear there driveing me insane, just leaveing my computer idol for 30 minutes brings literally about a hundred of them.

Or get XP sp2 - that will help if you turn on the auto popup blocker. But i suppose people will find a way around that in the future, as its a function built into windows.

I'm just too good !!(extreme smug mode of smuggy smugness !!!)...you're very welcome Richie....as a tip though, there may be some pages which rely on pop-up parts of their site...if you encounter this, just keep the 'ctrl' button pushed as you click the link and it will allow the pop up to work.....you'll probably figure it out,, and it explains it anyway. Happy Browsing.

Richie i think google toolbar thing worked for u.But since u were getting popups that indicates that u have spyware on the computer. Also tell me is ur homepage also hijacked.i mean instead of going to ur homepage it redirects u to some other page or is ur computer recently running very slow.then i think u will have to remove those spyware from the computer.

Thanks Victor, my computer is only a few months old, but I have mangaged to install SP2 on my other computer (a laptop) without any problems at all. There is no advice from Microsoft that you have to reinstall the whole operating system from scratch, and the install process runs automatically. I really appreciate your advice and will do as you suggest after I've run out of every available option, but I must say, I'm not comfortable about having to reinstall XP....will I lose all my settings and documents ?...and why has everybody else I know have had no problems installing SP2 without having to reinstall the complete XP ?...I really appreciate your help.
Thanks Victor

[:)]Neil u r absolutely right but the thing is microsoft will never agree that its latest sp2 is creating problems. Moreover neil i am a dell certified system administrator.i am working with dell from more than a year.u r also right when u say ur computer is only three monts old but the important point here is sp2 did not come with ur computer ,u installed it urself.I WOULD ADVICE U NOT TO FORMAT THE SYSTEM AND REINSTALL WINXP(DONT DO IT).IT IS ALWAYS A LAST RESORT.BEST THING TO DO IS TO UNINSTALL SP2 ONLY IF U THINK THE PROBLEM IS CREATED BY SP2 AND NOT BY ANY OTHER PROGRAM ON UR COMPUTER.
YES U WILL LOSE ALL THE DATA FROM UR COMPUTER WHEN U DO A CLEAN REINSTALLATION.ALWAYS TAKE A BACKUP OF DATA ON A CD BEFORE FORMATING UR COMPUTER.U CAN TELL ME WHICH ERROR MESSAGES U R GETTING MAY BE I CAN HELP U SOLVE THEM.

[:D]Victor, many thanks again. What I have done is rebooted into safe mode and just used a 'restore point' to set the computer back to where it was. SP2 is still on the computer but not installed. I appreciate your help with this problem and I think I'll leave SP2 alone for a while, perhaps, in the near future Microsoft will release further additions to clear up the bugs.
I did think it was Norton 2004 that may have been the offending item , as I understand it resides quite deep within the system, so I disabled all parts of it and used MSCONFIG to disable all start up programs...but...depsite doing that, the same thing occurs, I get to the LOGO screen with the new blue progress bar and then, the computer just reboots and goes through the same procedure all over again and again !!..never mind....I'm sure it'll all work out in the end for me. Your expertise is fondly appreciated Victor and WELCOME to the forum[:D]

YES it is being hijacked, but only when I go to my email. Right after i try to sign on it automatically redirects me to some search site.
I've searched my program files and remove program list but nothing seems out of place.
Any suggestions?

Ok to solve this problem follow the following steps:-
go to c:\windows\system32\drivers
now in drivers folder u will see one file HOSTS
delete that HOSTS file.delete only the HOSTS file not the one which says LMHOST.
once u have deleted the host file.close all the open windows on the desktop.
now restart the computer
once the computer is restarted connect the internet.dont open internet explorer.
Then click on start on ur desktop and click on RUN
u will see a dialog box
in that dialog box type this
http://www.sunbelt-software.com/dellscan
click on OK
after this u will see a screen which will give u a button SCANNOW
click on SCANNOW
it will scan ur computer for any pests
if u want u can also download this program
i think its one of the best softwares which removes any spyware or trojans from ur computer.

This is also a good site to check if you have any parasites in your browser.... http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/ just clicking there does a quick check (takes about a second !!) and has some good advice too.

I highly recommend the Google toolbar. However, it won't help the spyware/adware problem. I used adaware and three other products before I finally got all the **** off my computer. I also had to do some "manual uninstall" work to get some of them. Now I'm a little more careful about what I install. I've been known to just reformat the drive and start over, and I might have done a little better time wise had I just done that. Live and learn.

If you really want total control over your browser and what it does, download Mozilla. (http://www.mozilla.org) It has an integrated popup blocker in addition to letting control exactly what OTHER functions javascript is allowed to do. It also has decent cookie management if you're a privacy freak like me but have a few sites (like this one) that you want to allow cookies for.
Oh and it comes with a mail reader that won't spam everyone in your address book if you read a virused email.

WOW....So i downloaded the Pest control software and started scanning my computer. I never would of thought thered be thousands of those spyware things, although the majority was something called Claria.
Deleted em all, rebooted and everything appears to be fine [:)]
thanks

very interesting reading this thread. I had horrendous problems with my computer at work, in fact its been officially dead for three weeks (and the b******s havn't yet got me another one). pest control and teh google toolbar solved a lot of its problems, but unfortunately you can't cure old age.
my laptop at home has Norton 2004, which seems to have solved pretty much everything so far. I think the google thing will definately be going on that one too, now that I've seen how good it is on the work machines.
Thanks for mentioning the pop-up blocker over-ride!! extemely useful, and something i didn't know.

If you REALLY want TOTAL control over your computers, download Linux! www.linux.org is a good place to start. Most distributions allow total control over every aspect of the operating system. And if the control is not there, you can simply edit the source code for the appropriate module, re-compile, and woila! - you have a completely customizable solution to all your problems.

The got into trouble over the name sounding too much like some other operting system, so they changed the name to "Linspire". There is no doubt more info at http://www.linspire.com
I've heard good things about Gentoo linux but so far I'm still running RedHat 9 (and a lot of Windoze [:(]).
