Title: What is the most controversial thing you have ever said?
Post by: Make it Lady on 15/02/2009 22:58:41
I often speak without engaging my brain and have brought up subjects that I wished I hadn't. What have you said that has had the mob baying for your blood?

When about 12 or 13 I said in a Social Studies class that America and China would one day be allies against Russia, after reading the study article on the histories and population growth of the three countries. Well, as China now own us, I guess that is about right. I was laughed out of class at the time.

When I suggested recently to my mother in law that children of the age of 10 - 12 should have sex education that included how to use contraceptives and that they should also be allowed to gain access to them, I was strongly rebuked. I didn't think that it was that controversial, but apparently it was....

Anyway, here we are now with the news that Britain has its youngest father who got his girlfriend pregnant when he was 12.......and it seems that he is only one of 3 potential fathers, who are all of a similar age. The girl's parents must be very proud......

When I was at boarding school I once announced that kangaroo's milk must be very nutritious as it enabled a newborn only an inch long to get to be a big joey.
This defined me as 'other' and became an opportunity for ragging up until the day I left - but it is character building.

The composition of milk differs widely between species. Factors such as the type of protein; the proportion of protein, fat, and sugar; the levels of various vitamins and minerals; and the size of the butterfat globules and the strength of the curd are among those than can vary.
For example:

    * Human milk contains, on average, 1.1% protein, 4.2% fat, 7.0% lactose (a sugar), and supplies 72 kcal of energy per 100 grams.
    * Cow milk contains, on average, 3.4% protein, 3.6% fat, and 4.6% lactose, 0.7% minerals and supplies 66 kcal of energy per 100 grams.

Donkey and horse milk have the lowest fat content, while the milk of seals and whales can contain more than 50% fat. High fat content is not unique to aquatic animals, as guinea pig milk has an average fat content of 46%.

However, it's a real bugger trying to get the milking machine onto the guinea pig's udders.

I agree completely and was also rebuked for the having the same opinion.

A few years ago one of Nics classmates became pregnant at the ripe old age of 13!  My friends and I were discussing it and the general concensus was that the girl and boy should get married.  I was horrified and made it clear that there was not a snowballs chance in hell that I would ever let my 13 y.o. get married because he/she made a mistake.  When asked how I would feel if it were my daughter I said the same thing.  You don't take care of one mistake by making another.

This same group of women were appalled at the thought of educating their children on birth control and safe sex.  Most of their children were sexually active (which gives me a mind to start a new topic about this) but the majority of them said if they were old enough to play, they were old enough to pay the price.  I simply don't understand this mindset.  I could not seem to get across to them that they were not only risking unwanted pregancies, but their very lives.  I don't endorse teenage sex and I don't think they are emotionally ready for it until at least 17 or older, but I don't believe our children should have to pay with their lives for being curious and horny!

LOL...they weren't too thrilled with me either when they found out my best friend is an atheist and that the majority of my friends fall under the athiest, wiccan or pagan categories.

Did I mention I live in a VERY religious community?  Primarily Pentecostal Holiness?

Wonder why I haven't been invited back? [:(]

When I was thirteen there was a massive outbreak of glandular fever in my girls school. It was only later that I realised that this was code for "my daughter is having an abortion."
Teenage pregnancy in Britain is very, very high. I don't know what the answer is but leaving them in the dark doesn't help (not literally!!!!)
I was responsible for introducing a course on self respect to go along with the sex education at the school I first taught at. Children need to know how to respond to the peer pressure that goes along with "doing it!" A lot of girls that get pregnant on perpose do so because they feel unloved and want something of their own to love. They need to learn to love themselves first before going out and mistaking sex for love. It is such a complex issue. I really don't think sex education should stand alone. The psycological side of sex is the area that needs to be covered too.
