The heavens just opened...big time !!
Does anyone else love the summer rain too !!
I just went out into the garden and enjoyed the splish splash....and now the kids have turned up from school all wet too [:D]
..But I have to say..I'm a lover of rain

I heard this was already happening up north yesterday (which is why it surprised me that it was coming in from the south-easterly direction).
After the intense heat of the last few days, it is quite a relief (although we could do with a little more, as it is still quite warm and muggy).
Only real problem is that I had a few micro power cuts while it was happening. Luckily my computers are all on UPS, but I forgot the my ADSL modem is not, so I lost the broadband connection, and it too a while before it would settle down again.

Gosh...I was in luck then george as I don't have a UPS or surge protector and thunder and lightning was happening all around...plus..I didn't lose my adsl either.
I guess I should get one though...I know you can pick them up from B & Q and Argos for relatively good prices but are the affordable ones any good at all ?

UPS's have come down in price a lot, and they can be had for around £30 to £40.
What you have to be sure is not to demand too much of them.
Firstly, these cheap UPS's will only support your system for about 20 minutes without power (depends upon how much power your system draws). Since I have only once in the last 10 years had a power cut that exceeded that time, and most power cuts are only for a few seconds, then this is not really a limitation I am concerned about.
You should not run printers through a cheap UPS because their power demands can be too erratic.
The cheap UPS's can supply 350VA or 500VA – this is enough to run a couple of PC's (depending upon how powerful your PC's are), and a few network devices, but no more. They are really only designed to run a single PC, and have a little slack on top.
Within these constraints, I have had no problems with them at all. I started using them when I managed to lose a HDD after a momentary power cut, and since then have often been thankful that the UPS's were there when I had further mini power cuts.

I tell you Jimmy Boy...based on the heat of the last few days (late 20's early 30's C) I wish it did rain more....I just can't handle this heat....21C is just right for me !!...sorry Fahrenheit lovers..I don't do Fahrenheit.....work it out yourself !! *uh oh...heat is making me bad tempered* [:(]

Gadzooks! 21 C is in about 73 degrees F. To me here in Texas that is nearly cool - 50's (F) is cool. You should try temps of 100 (37-38C) we have here. I have seen temps here as high as 45C - They happen at least once a year for many consecutive days. That is when you really do not want to go outside. But as a child I grew up acclimated to those temps, before household air conditioning was very common. Your spoiled. How did the Empire ever function?

Today, here in Florida it's 92 degrees F, and it's only going to get hotter in the coming weeks. Oh how I would love it to be 21C.
I love summer rain too, as long as it's not accompanied by a hurricane.

Hi jumbob It dosent rain that much here in the SE of england anymore and most of us are under drought orders. Snows another thing which we see very rarely these days and when we do get it its melted within an hour or two. . I also heard that the uk is now supposed to be the tornado capital of the world , they may not be big and bad like the ones in the USA but the number of small ones which we have is supposed to outnumber those every other country in the world, i find it hard to believe though.

Humidity is a big factor on how hot it feels, last year in turkey during my holiday it was 45 degress but due to the low humidity levels it felt on par with 30 in the uk. When i came home it was 28 but was harder to handle than the 45 in turkey.
My friend from cuba says its so humid their that at 30 degree you cant do anything with out floods of sweat soaking through your clothes, he thinks the climate in the uk is the best he has ever experienced. But me i like the turkish heat as you can still do things, even at 45 degrees you dont break out into a heavy sweat.

Wow I did not know that about tornados there! With all the very old archetecture I would have thought The elements there such as tornados would be very mild as everything seems to stay in tact there!
As for our weather it is 12:44 PM and it is a cool 55 degrees no sun just over cast!

Tornados are fun here too...but having rain at this time of the year is a rarity for us...as for me...I LOVE THE RAIN!!! Except in the winter! Yes, your temps for us would be cool for us...we will take 20-30C... Jimbob...where at in Texas are you?

Neil Has the rain continued or was the sun out for the duration of the day. I do like light rains in the summer. But I love a rip roaring storm and a nice warm fire and some hot cocoa and a nice friend or a good book to talk to or read! Maybe a game of chess, checkers or scrabble.

Hey Karen, it was funny at work yesterday as the clouds started creeping in...everyone was telling me, hey, Loretta here is your beautiful weather...(they don't like thunderstorms..hehe) The new guy thought I was weird...I told him if he was not kind mother nature would zap him in the .... I had to take a golfcart and run to the other property and sure enjoyed the weather aas it was changing...I am so excited for the day as I know we will have more storms!

This is what happens when I finally cleared my loo blockage
When I came home earlier today this is what I found !..I had the
kids in the car with me and I of course just had to drive through it
[:D][:D]....I didn't need to but I wanted to.....Yea !! [:D]....my
neighbours were standing on the opposite side and were worried that
it was going to reach their house....when I drove through it I made
a really big splash and soaked their driveway [:D][:D]....it was
embarassing because I had to turn around and go through it again to
get back to my house !!![:D][:D][:D]......for some reason they
weren't in their driveway when I came back !!!

Mad we did not receive the rain...but the atmospheric pressure was very odd today...one minute humidity nearly killed us...next it was a bit breezy and cool...??? Weird weather...Missed this rain and hope it rains the rest of the weak...warm is good, but Texas weather is not warm, but always 10 months of serious heat...40c or more..ick!

Hey Neil, I enjoyed a summer rain the other night myself and it was truly refreshing! Its amazing how refreshed one feels after a rain like that. Everthing feels fresh and it seems to really heighten your sense of smell and it is rather exhilerating to go out in it and just enjoy it as it falls upon your face!umm very nice! About how many inches of water do you think fell on that september day in your drive? It looks pretty high!....Karen

Police and firemen attended to more than 1,000 emergencies, and several open air events, including a concert to celebrate South Africa's hosting of the football World Cup 2010, were cancelled as rain and thunder lashed the city late Friday.
Meteorologists said Berlin had more than half its average monthly rainfall for July in just a few minutes.
Traffic was severely disrupted by the downpour and pedestrians found themselves up to their ankles in rain, while hundreds of cellars, underground garages and cars were flooded.
About 800 police and firemen were sent out to remove about 50 uprooted trees.
The Italian football team, which is playing France in the World Cup final in Berlin on Sunday, delayed their move to the capital from their tournament base in Duisberg because the pitch in the capital was deemed too wet for a practice session.

Looks like the eye and partial face of an egyption mummy or something with that old dried skin, Peeking through a window frame, then I thought it was a scene from Godzilla or Jurrasic park or something! Now I look again and it looks like and old car headlight that is broken out with a strange gaurd over it! Who knows, my brain could see just about anything you know!......even with my eyes closed......Karen

Yep, it was just so heavy the rain..... that the drains could not handle it.
But it's a very moot point that where I live there is a lake just 100 meters away and we are atop a high water table here.....lifting up the floor boards reveals 5-8 inches of water 2-3 feet down...beneath the house. looking at an old map 1894...I have found that our house and the surrounding few are slap bang in the middle of another lake !!....obviously not here now but it must have an effect on the surrounding high water table don't you think ?

I would be willing to bet it does! How old is your house Neil, It looks rather like newer construction? Mine was built in around 1959 I think. It was built by old mill workers! It was done with two rooms first, like a cabin then added onto over the years as their family grew!
I wonder how much water still remains beneath you, and will that cause problems with sinking and unleveling of said structure or foundation?.....Karen

Actually Mam, I think this house was built in the 1930-40s...it has some rather unique features inside...some wonderful art deco fireplaces...stained leaded glass windows, .....and as mentioned in a previous post...in addition to other features...it has a bomb shelter in the back of the garden....so...assuming my house is the original one on this plot...it must be at least 65 years old.
The water has been there ever since we moved in here...over twelve years ago....when we did move in...we had to have a damp course put in and it's been fine ever since.
Occasionally, I lift the (hang on ).....(goes to lift floorboards and inserts his long probe to find the wetness...lol)
well...for the first time in at least twelve years there is no lake beneath my house !!...it's still mulchy and gooey but it's dry (ish)....I am not surprised considering the temperature of the last week...

I would never have guesed it was that old, looking at your post. I like old houses, they have some really cool architecture! I have seen some of the pictures in the book that I bought, but am amazed at The buildings in London, I had no idea Sir!.....Karen

Oh dear, these Americans have no idea of what old means [:D]
OK, I'll admit, my house is regarded as modern, 1970's; but much of the North-West of London was rapidly expanding in the interwar years (although I suspect that one of the houses I lived in during my pre-teen years, also in North-West London, a basement flat originally would probably have been occupied by servants who serviced the town house above, was probably pre WWI, but another flat just a few streets away which I lived in during me teen years would have probably been 1960's built). The flats my half-sister lives in in Hampstead are also 1930s.
The old buildings are generally regarded as anything before the 20th century. Yes, there have been some listed 1930s buildings, such as the Hoover factory building on the A40, but when one considers that only a few miles from me one has Hatfield House, which the newer part of is Jacobean, and the older one was around in QEI's time (she spent her early years there, kept out of the way by her sister, QM).
Now I am just waiting for my commission from the English Tourist Board [:D]

I think they are beautiful as for crossing them I can in a vehicle. I have a small fear of heights that I have been working on for some years now! I can do most of them, but some just make me down right dizzy!.....Karen

George, Your photo collection is incredible! The structures are amazing and exquisite! I have nary been a traveler maybe just a couple states mostly before 5 years of age. Oregon Idaho and Montana as adult. Texas Oklahoma and Washington as a child! Don't remember too much. Never much left my own County of my Birth! Thank you for sharing them. I will have to come back here and look at them often, as they are great!....Karen

Karen, Bridges are most fascinating...before my fire, I would research them in the US and make a road trip and discover off the wall places where some are never driven over anymore...it was wonderful! Now all I can treasure is the memories...

Hey Loretta, They have a foot bridge in a place three hours from me, IN REDDING CALIFORNIA, It is made of Glass, exquisite really. I cant remember the designers name, famous guy did some great things in Europe. This bridge is really cool!!! Try to find it on the net, I know it is there. Maybe Bridges in Redding California......Karen

Sundial Bridge is interesting...it is a 23 million dollar project. Santiago Calatrava was the engineer...it just opened in 2004! I will look up other works that he has done as well...pretty ingenious! Turtle Bay...hmmm, I am trying to remember what else about turlebay is of importance...?

Summer rain, wonderfuly cool on my skin. I just want to dance in it like I did as child, dance and splash in puddles.
My mother would try to catch me but at 4 yrs old I was to quick for her - however my fun would come to an abrupt end when she finally caught me.
I still miss my mum.

We will probably have some warm days yet, but I do think we've broken the back of the heat of summer – and it will be a more comfortable and gentle warmth – but then, I could to totally and utterly wrong, and we yet have some record breaking temperatures to come.

I simply love the rain full stop. Summer rain is great though, warm out but the rain soon cools you off.
I especially love thunder storms, the sound and the amazing light show makes me feel humble in it's awe. Nature is wonderful and should be respected, especially when you have seen the awesome power of thunderstorm, storms at sea etc.
The other great thing about thunderstorms is how clean the air smells straight after one.
I sleep so much soundly when a thunderstorm is going, I just feel safe. BUt they do also make me feel some what horny [:I]
There were a couple of great thunderstorms in Bristol a couple of months back.

I saw the ground was damp in the morning, so it may well have been raining overnight. There was certainly very heavy rain during the day yesterday, but when I came home around 1 in the morning, there was a certain amount of ground mist, but no rain (good fun trying to drive along single track roads, in the dark, through misty conditions, with rabbits constantly trying to commit suicide under the wheels of your car – luckily, not many other fools on the road at that time).

There was a brief thunerstorm last night in Bristol, although I didn't realise at first, I thought it was the police again [:I] But it was a little disappointing as it was nothing like the one before which was amazing.

Despite the summer rain LO...us here in my part of the world (London and the south of England) we are still in the middle of a drought too !!...we've been subjected to a hose pipe ban for ages now !!

Wow it has been about 80 degrees here for a while we had a couple foggy cool days but mostly beautiful... we have come into our summers end and it looks like we might have a beautiful indian summer also.One of my favorite seasons.It has been staying 70 to mid 70's in the evening a bit to warm for night temps!
