Title: What's the best fish bait?
Post by: Simulated on 08/04/2008 13:17:11
We always use worms, or night crawlers, or whatever you wanna call them that we gathered from walking around the plants and field by our house.

We occosionaly use liver too.

I've also heard that the black, nasty tasting my i add, licoric is one of the best baits.

But I guess it does depend on the fish you want right..We are looking for mainly cats.

Worms are not much use if you're after catching a large shark.

There is stuff called "Stink Bait" that most big time catfish-fishermen swear by. This is because catfish are mainly scavengers. If it stinks it catches catfish.

Stink Bait is made form a lot of stuff - usually a grain and offal from meat and chicken pr even fish. Some people say that the fish  offal is the best.

Is it true that fishermen warm up maggots by putting them under their tongues before using them as bait....yuk! I'd never put a maggot in my mouth.

I've seen quite a few anglers pop gentles in their gobs. Whether they are placed under the tongue, I know not.

I think they are called "Bait Shops"

Trust the redneck to know about catching catfish  [:P]

Trust a Beaver to draw the wrong conclusions - rednecks do not appreciate Bach, read Alexander Pope, David Hume, or know who the heck Thomas Arne is or what he is most famous for having written.

Anyone can cast dispersions, a refined person, such as myself, just rises above them.

Now that this issue is settled - I think I'll go put on my boots: need to go out to the north 40 and check on the heifers that are about trow a calf. Ed's been camping out there and probably needs a shower and a hot meal.

A medium size dead fish will do the trick for catfish, they have no trouble locating a deadbait in the muddy bottoms of lakes and slow moving rivers. Think they feed early mornings. You could do a search on Matacafe and Youtube for some good pointers

If it ain't at Wal-Mart it isn't made. -- but then they may nor make stink bait in China.

Make your own - get some raw liver, grind it up, let it get real raunchy-smelling.  Mix 1/3 stinky liver with 2/3rds corn meal or flour and enough Crisco or lard to keep it from coming apart in water - this could be a lot of lard.

Oh, yeh, don't do this in the basement or the house - do it outside in a place cats and dogs can't get to and also in some water to keep the ants away. Mix outsiode and store in an odor-proof bag or use immediately. You should probably wear rubber gloves or those surgical gloves you can get at Wal-Mart

Form it into balls around the hook with the point just below the surface so when you set the hook they won't throw the hook out.

Oh - tell your little brother or he might eat it.

Look buster - excuse me, DOCTOR Beaver, I have caught more fish in my lifetime than you have had castrations - er, I mean KITS.

I am an avid fisherman and need no such thing as a Google search to make stink bait, set a crab or craw fish pot, know where to cast a fly, where to cast a bass lure, how to set a trot line, either at sea or in fresh water, Where to go to gig flounder, how to set a steel leader on a deep sea rig - and any number of other fishing tricks you haven't a clue about. I have been fishing since I was 16 and that is a LONG time.

Any more rude comments should be addressed to my lawyer, Reinhard P. Snappinyungerkatzen, if you have any  ba**s left to try any more supposedly "snappy," or stupid comments.

I believe you were the "worm" to whom I was referring -

worm (wûrm)  n., v. <wormed, worm-ing>
              n.
  4.  a groveling, abject, or contemptible
      person.

I use shrimp and squid when fishing in the ocean - great stuff and then when I catch trash fish they get cut up and used for the bigger stuff like lemon fish and snapper - fish around production platforms or artificial reefs set by the state relatively close to the shore. But if you are fishing from a pier, such as the Atlantic Richfield docks Across from Port Aransas, Texas along the Intercoastal Canal, fish at night under the lights with shrimp and there are so many white sea trout that you need barely put any bait on the hook. It is fast and furious - I fed myself during summers while working in Corpus Christ fishing this pier.

I think you should go fishing tomorrow and catch a shark or two for your mother!  That would be soooo good for dinner! [:)]

JimBob - by Lemon Fish do you mean Lemon Shark?
Title: What's the best fish bait?
Post by: JimBob on 13/04/2008 16:32:38
No - it is a variety of fish in the Gulf of Mexico that actually has a yellowish cast to it's belly. - I will try Google -

Yes, it is also known as:

Black Kingfish
Crab Eater
Lemon Fish
Ling

Google "Lemon Fish" - you will get pictures -  the variety we get along the Texas coast is the lighter colored version during some times of the year.

Caught a lot of fish myself :) Used to fish freshwater, competition fishing, then started sea fishing and liked the idea of eating what I caught, so sold course fishing tackle. Not been fishing for a long time though. Was featured in the Sea Fishing Magazine titled "Big Bass Bonanza", picturing yours truly holding up 3 double figure bass caught from the shore by trawling sandeels on a carp rod and real vey slowly over the launching Jetty at Brixham Harbour. My son aged 6 then "My how time flies past" holding a ten and a quarter pound bass he caught and landed himself :) Proud day that was :)

I will take some digital photographs of him holding the fish and see how they turn out when put on the net. Looks pretty amazing when you see how big the fish is compared to him at 6 :) Thanks for the applause Doc. He also has some pics of large carp he has caught, these are digital so can be viewed online with ease.

Well hopefully that went ok: try clicking on the picture to view slide show
