Like you said if they had not received HIV or other diseases that can be passed through delivery from the birth canal. Their are other ways for your partner to transfer disease.. like Hepititis.. or shared things like toothbrushes nail clippers etc. I have a aquaintance who has hep C and the list of things she cannot share with others is very ong as it can carry the problem to others that may use her things. She has to keep separate nail clippers fingernail files, she cannot have her nails done in a shop because she could spread it. if any of the tools become contaminated through a nick or cut etc.
Regardless as to weather you have ever had a partner you should be tested before you even consider sexual contact. Everyone should.

Fact is.........if your hygiene is 'spot on' and the two people you mention have had sex with only each other then you're pretty sure you can be safe (relatively). ....of course sex can mean any number of different things.....doesn't necessarily mean intercourse !
One can pick up a nasty germ just from kissing an aunt (cold sore)....from touching dirty things and not washing properly....sneezing in your hand or coughing too if you have a cold....all you have to do is pay a visit to the loo having not washed your hand before hand and transmission can be possible !
Keep it clean....ya know what I mean ?

Yes ,STD'S are sexually transmitted but there are other things like HIV ,HEPATITUS etc which can be caught in other ways such as the sharing needles ,blood transfusions ,even sitting on a toilet seat is enough for some infections.

While sharing a toilet seat may allow infection, sharing a door handle is probably more likely to transmit infection (and ofcourse don't forget all those insects, etc., that will do the sharing for you).
Generally the more intimate the contact, and the longer the exposure, and any break in the skin, will all increase the likelihood of some infection or other.

I hope none of you think that a 13 year old like myself has had sex. I was just thinking about my future because I know I'd only have my wife and I'm sure she would only have me. I was just checking.

It is a good idea to be prepared and excellent that you asked the question. It is a good question and many people would be surprised at how not only sex can transmit these diseases etc, saliva etc. I have had an infection in my heart and found that it could have been passed to me through saliva etc. bacteria that enters through the mouth can cause problems I had a heart murmur like you... I have far more wrong now, but Infection can get us when we are not careful clean or not practicing safe sex or intimacy that may come with relationships.
I am glad you asked for your future as well as others who may read.. It is a great thread Ryan!

Leads me to another question! You never heard of teen pregneces in the olden days when they didn't teach you about sex. But now that they are telling us about it there are more and more teen pregnaces. Is it just a conicidence or are is teaching us teens about it a bad idea?

I think there is a bigger awareness now, but don't be fooled there were lots of teen pregnancies well before my time even and back in my grandmas time too. it is age old problem... they just used to hush it up! Ship the girl away to a relative, hide her and make her give up the baby for adoption, sometimes parents would pretend the child was theirs and they would raise the baby! So many things hidden back then it was taboo etc. Sad that is the way things were instead of talking to the kids and educating the young they chose to forbid and all that...
I think there is a higher occurrence these days but personally I think it has nothing to do with education, but to do with peer pressure and in some cases drugs abuse of alcohol at very young ages and many other factors, kids have a lot more pressure on them in todays society. It is not easy growing up these days with lots of ills that happen in homes abuse etc.. there are tons of things which pressure children they are expected to be more grown up these days in order to prepare them for these problems in life .. they are in your face so to speak and learning to deal with them is not easy!

Kissing is nice but you still need to be careful perfectly normal when you really start dating..It is just important like Neil said be safe keep it clean!

Ryan, I'm glad you're thinking ahead and thinking about the repercussions of your future actions. You're asking great questions and I hope you will continue to try and be informed.
When you say "the olden days", how far back are you talking?
Teen pregnancies happened back then too. You didn't hear about it as much because it was "shameful" and therefore it was kept hidden.
I don't think teaching teens about sex is a bad idea at all. Today, the consequences of sex are not only pregnancy, although that is a huge one!!! I want my children to know the risks and to know how to protect themselves. I don't think that the consequences of having sex should be a death sentence. The only way to prevent this is to learn how to protect yourself AND your partner.

Teachers love me because I try, I listen I succeed. Parents love me. Other kids parents love me. I just try, get my stuff done don't complain, don't do much to attract attention to myself, but I get it even when I don't try because I'm such a good kid.
What just happened? Idk Oh well I lost part of I'll just type it again.
I will always want to know the consquences of my actions. And it is great to have a site like this (Science explains lots of stuff and the people that are here to explain it with Science and life. Its just great) to ask these kinds of questions.
So that's why you never heard of that kinds of stuff!

The reason why you hear of teen pregnancies more today than in the "olden days" is purely because we have the means to gather more data efficiently and also the means to report on it more..ie: TV, radio, internet,local networks,hospitals and clinics talking to each other and gathering data newspapers, magazines...etc etc..........PLUS !..there is any case...a general increase...........Here in the UK we have I think the highest number of teen pregnancies in Europe...and I don't mean 16 +...I mean 14 + !

Addendum:......kids grow up a lot quicker nowadays !!...they are exposed to far more sexual orientated data than a long time ago. Magazines aimed at young teens offer sexual advice ....Pop Culture is filled with sexual innuendos !!

I remember watching a show last week. An info show. And they went to Bolder Colorado High School and Junior High and College. They interviewed kids about sex. And 1/2 the kids 9 (YES 9) have experimented with sex. Crazy ain't iT?!?!?!

Yes it is crazy. Ryan when I was pregnant with my first child there was this little girl in the waiting room and her mom was scolding her about picking up the toys she was playing with at the obstetricians office. The mom was frustrated and the kid was back to me and thew a huge fit and was stomping her feet and sat on the floor and whined and cried around about not wanting to pick up her toys.. Little toys Ryan.. a Barbie some things like that.. she turned when I sat down by her mom and looked over her shoulder at me. She stopped whining and smiled . then looked at her mom and scowled..! LOL She was so little cute and had such a baby face I thought what a pretty little girl!..The nurse came and called a name two women looked up and then this mom stood up and said too her daughter come on get off the floor its time to see the doctor she started kicking her feet and said NO I don't have to I don't want to..mom grabbed her hand and lifted her up quite forcefully! When she turned around I almost dropped my mouth on the floor she was just nine years old and 7 months pregnant! I honestly had to leave as I was starting to cry for her.. she was still a little girl playing with Barbie's and she was about to give birth to another baby when in my opinion she was still a baby herself! Oh my I was worried about her for weeks! she did not do well with her delivery and she hemorrhaged and neither little mama or baby made it to the hospital in time. Her body was not ready for a baby. Several of us moms asked many times and the doctor would say nothing. But one day just before I delivered, the girls mom came and posted a very nice thank you to all of us women who had spoken so nicely to her and her daughter and said that they had both passed on and that she had been carrying a little girl. It was so very sad.. I will never forget her little face and my shock that first day meeting her. I am sorry they both passed and I have always kept them in my prayers.

It rather depends on what you mean by the historic comparisons.
It is certainly true that we have a lot of sex on television, and other media; but in the past, there was a lot of sex on the farm (every young child was more than aware of what bulls did to cows). There was a middle class prudishness that developed as people moved off the land and nature seemed a nasty dirty thing, and sex simply was not talked about (not sure if this post is more relevant here of in Karen's thread on sex and violence).
Until the early Victorian era, the age of consent in England was 12 years old for girls, and 14 for boys (as it still is in some third world countries - it would be interesting to know how many of those teenage pregnancies we have today are from recent immigrants from some of these countries, although that is not to question that many are not). Although it has to be said that from 1753 you required your parents consent to marry if you were under 21 (not the case in Scotland, and hence the popularity of Gretna Green for elopements), and if you got a girl pregnant while she was living at home, or in employment, you were likely to be sued for seduction (i.e. that the employer/parent was denied the benefit of the labour of the girl because she had become pregnant).
The law on seduction seems to have been slightly different in the US, but it is interesting to note that Frank Sinatra, as late as 1938, was charged (although the charges were later dropped) with seduction.

I think that better diet is causing children to enter puberty earlier, but I am not at all sure that this is lowering the age in which people start to become sexually active. On the contrary, my own suspicion is that the age of sexual activity probably has more to do with stress levels in the community, and likely life expectancy (it is rational to assume that people who see members of their community living longer have less of a need to become sexually active early, since their whole time frame in which they view life is longer; whereas people who fear imminent death will more likely want to rush through the other parts of their life, including rushing into sexual activity and parenthood).
Certainly, in times of war, there is an increase in births in all age groups.
Also, ofcourse, there is a lot of peer pressure (not specifically on TV and the media, but amongst the kids around you) where if they are all having early sexual experiences, one feels left out, while if they are all abstaining, then that is the norm one expects for oneself. There is also cross generational expectations, where I would expect the children of teenage mums to be more likely to follow their parents example.
