Title: Tribute bands
Post by: DoctorBeaver on 25/09/2007 19:56:25
I'm listening to loadsa Yes at the moment. They have to be 1 of the greatest bands of all time (Chris will agree). It got me to thinking about tribute bands.

I've seen quite a few & some of them have been damned good. 1 in particular springs to mind. It was a Bon Jovi tribute band called By Jovi. They looked & sounded like the real thing.

My question, though, is this. Why have some of the greatest ever bands not got any tribute bands going? I'm thinking Yes, King Crimson, ELP, Wishbone Ash, The Who, Mahavishnu Orchestra.

Surely it can't be that there are no musicians around these days who are talented enough to play their music? No, that can't be true. There must be plenty of Rick Wakemans, Steve Howes, Chris Squires, Keith Emersons, Carl Palmers, Alan Whites, Robert Fripps, Doctor Beavers (OK, maybe not that last 1  [:(] ). I'm sure Sim could whack out a few Steve Howe licks if he tried (& had 20 fingers).  [:P]

So let's have your views on tribute bands and your thoughts as to why the sort of bands I mentioned don't have any tribute bands going around.

Bon Jovi!!

The Who!!

:) Yeah i just told you I can play one of their songs. I haven't looked up no Bon Jovi, but I"m sure I could play that. The who..I know them, but I don't remember what songs they play. Probably could play some of that too.

YES are the best !

saw them on their 35th Anniversary tour....also saw Keith Emerson last year doing a load of ELP and The Nice stuff !!

I can think of one possible reason why there aren't many tribute bands...because the realms or Prog rock's purview is not far and wide enough to warrant it commercially !.....you're not gonna get a pub full of punters listening to a twenty minute version of  Close to the edge !..(incidentally...my fave Yes song is the first part of I've seen All Good People...best version is the live version on the  Keys to Ascension album.....and Starship Trooper on that is awesome too !!)

However, if you seek....ye shall find that there are tribute Cds to ELP, YES, Pink Floyd etc etc..I have a few !!..I even have a pretty cool Modern remix of a load of ELP stuff but you have to like modern dance stuff to appreciate it !!...Lots of drum 'n' bass !!..and trancey stuff !!..which I luff !

I just think the prog rock bands of old are not mainstream enough to warrant a tribute band to make a living !!.......Of course, having said that...a whole plethora of tribute bands will now make themselves known !!..I'd go see them !!....and I hope I am wrong and there a few out there !!

saw a great ac/dc tribby band a few months ago in a pub "whole lotta dc" - prefer it though when they cover a few artists and just do their major hits

seeing the real deal next month when the FOO-FIGHTERS hit town - tickets were sold out in 20 minutes - i had the desktop and a laptop logged into ticketmaster and also my mobile on repeat ring - got through 7 minutes after they came online and got 4 really good seats (cant wait)

Pink Floyd! I just heard "Another Brick in the wall Part 2" on the radio this mornnig.

Ac/Dc! I really wanna learn some of their songs. I can lay the easy version of "Whole Lotta Rosey" intro and "Thunderstuck" into.

Freddie Mercury is an amazing singer/piano player

Was.

He was 1 of the greatest front-men ever but his piano playing was pretty mediocre.

Post by: neilep on 30/09/2007 18:05:00
I saw Queen three times !!..freddie WAS the best front man ever....a 'prancing megalomaniac' I once read one critics view...and he was right !!....but that was freddie !!....the ultimate showman....with a talent for composition and a voice to match !!.....he was just a natural !

Yes, he was. But maybe that's what made him such a great performer.
Title: Tribute bands
Post by: Simulated on 02/10/2007 22:50:57
Yeah that might be why. We don't have to get into all the gay song writers do we? Cuz yeah I can just say "80's music haha"

Post by: Karen W. on 03/10/2007 00:13:08
MAybe he was a great performer because he loved his music... I doubt very seriously it had anything to do with his sexual orientation..LOL.. My sexual orientation does not make me more skilled at anything else outside of sex then the man in the moon! LOL!

The names of "tribute" bands can be occasionally be amusing, such as ..

"Nudist Priest" (Juadas Priest)
"Pink Fraud" (Pink Floyd)
"Led Zeplica" (Led Zeppelin)
"Robbing Williams" (Robbie Willaims)
"Fake That" (Take That)
"Antarctic Monkeys" (Artic Monkeys)
"Oashish" (Oasis)

Any more ?
