Post by: neilep on 10/01/2009 16:59:09
Dearest Cottagers (lol...smirk !)

As a sheepy, I of course luff cottage cheese !..it's obvious isn't it ?..How could I not enjoy eating something that looks like my woolly coat in cheese form ?...Blatant even !!

So, there I am scoffing away the final few teaspoonfulls of what's left in the container.  I turn around to get some paper and this is what I am welcomed with when I turn back !!

The little rascal had ate it all...pinapple chunks too !!...Now I know cats are intolerant to milk and cream but does the same go for cottage cheese with pineapple chunks ?

Incidentally, you know that bottle of ale I need to drink ? (http://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/index.php?topic=18535.0)

Well, it's gorn walkies and I think I have found the culprit !!

Sorry Neil, I've no idea how a cat's digestive system responds to cottage cheese.  We've just adopted a couple of 8 month old kittens, and it seems they will eat anything - the tore their way into a loaf of bread the other day, and yesterday sneakily stole a mince pie (though most of that was spread around the living room, rather than eaten.)

Many cats are intolerant of lactose (this is intolerant in the sense that it'll make them throw up on your carpet), I don't know how much lactose is in cottage cheese, but feeding milk to cats is a bit chancy.

Cute kitty you got there Neil. Like Rosy wrote lactose is the problem, once a mammal is weaned the ability to digest milk vanishes and diarrhea is the result. There is a lot less lactose is cheeses, so kitty should be fine.

Oh and Ben? Your new house mates aren't kitten anymore, they're teenager cats and behave just like the human species, getting themselves into all sorts of trouble. The worst will be over when they reach their second year of life.  [;D]

My elderly cat has spent her whole life eating cheese and drinking milk. Her favourite (like Garfield) is lasagna. Sadly in her 19th year she has become lactose intolerant and can only drink special cat milk. She still eats small amounts of cheese but can't cope with creme fraise or cottage cheese. It is so sad. We would both enjoy some smoked salmon with cottage cheese and a sprinkle of brown sugar. It is delish! Try it sheepy but tie the cat up first or set the catflap to lock.

The trouble will truly begin when they leave university. [;D]
