Title: Grumble forum
Post by: DoctorBeaver on 25/06/2005 06:58:17
We should have 1 where we can moan like hell about things that annoy us & put forward suggestions on how to rectify the problem.

Good idea - I'll invent one asap :

Firstly, let's have a little interactivity. Everyone can post their suggestion for the name of the moan forum, and we'll run with the best one. That way the 'suggester' gets to christen a new forum !

I'll start the ball rolling. We have "Just Chat", so what about "Just moan" ?

I live in rural Puerto Rico (don't get jealous, yet!). The water for our community comes from a reserve tank up on the top of the hill. It is fed by an electric pump which gets its electricity from a different geographical source than the source for the water. The original electrical  design for the service here didn't include any way to restart the pump when the electric went off. The water folks don't do electricity and the electric folks can't remember who they are servicing. The electricity in this little pocket of about 200 families goes off more often than in the surrounding neighborhood. I can tell, because we are on a hillside and can see that everybody in a 270 degree arc still has power.

Two neighboring families have gasoline generators. We have a pool to  supply water for the toilets and such. We make do, but its worth griping about.

To members of The medical profession.

I have discovered a beautifully simple and yet highly effective method of stimulating the central and peripheral nervous system into self-repair. It has been demonstrated many times now with illnesses ranging from spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, optic nerve damage, Ekbom Syndrome (Restless Legs) and many non-neurological conditions. Ranging from osteoporosis, muscular atrophy, varicose veins, leg ulcer, oedema, visual problems, sleep disorders, and psoriasis.

I have met with and convinced many people in the medical circles, that this simple intervention offers some amazing therapeutic results; it is cost effective, non-invasive and does not include the use of any drugs. Many of the people I have helped, have approached their own G’P’s and specialist consultants. Yet, I have failed miserably in attracting the right people to help conduct a formal study.

All the time, I get many promises and every time, I have been let down with pathetic excuses relating to funding the study.

Should this study eventually come to fruition in a format that is acceptable to the scientific community and the medical profession at large. The N.H.S. financial savings alone would be phenomenal, not to mention the relief on human suffering.
Amputations would be significantly reduced, lives will be saved and the quality of life for all concerned would be greatly improved.

Yet, here I am some 12 years later singing the same old tune, which is falling on the same ears of the same majority of professional people I continuingly grow to dislike with a passion.

Charities guard their illnesses with the tenacity of a rabid lunatic, anything that threatens the disease / condition or remotely offers a solution, is vehemently defended.

The Drug companies, pump out £billions of drugs, many of which are eventually proved to have life threatening side effects and many more are taken off the shelves when the efficacy of the real life trials on the general public, reveal that they simply do not work! The double blind placebo controlled study is in place to show 2-3% efficacy and is often conducted with the aid of biased drug money. So how in the hell can one realistically expect to get funding or even support to conduct a drug free (Free Therapy)??? When the drug cartel’s control the way trials are performed, the people running the trials and the funding supporting the trials?

Angry? Too bloody right I am angry and with good cause to be bloody angry.

I have seen people regain their sight after long term progressive multiple sclerosis has supposedly irreversibly damaged the optic nerve. 2 independent opthalmologists wrote to me within a month of each other asking how two six inch blocks of wood under the head of a bed could restore sight to a blind person! I still have those letters!
One lady now legally drives a car without wearing spectacles. She has completed on Open University degree, despite previously being unable to make out the edge of the computer monitor!

John Caan, paralysed for 10 years gets out of his wheel chair and walks on Carlton Television News.

Spinal Cord Injury

On Saturday April 15th 2000, John obtained the timber for parallel bars to be erected at his home in Cornwall, On Sunday I went to John's home and completed the job, for tomorrow was to be a momentous occasion indeed.

John was left paralysed, in 1990, when surgery to his spine went wrong. He was told that after two years any chance of further recovery would be highly unlikely and for the next six years he experienced little if any change in his condition.

Monday morning I am on my way to John's home in Cornwall, to meet with Tim Iredale, who is a news reporter for Carlton Television Southwest. We intended to witness something truly magical. But could not have imagined what was in store for us.

John was about walk in front of a television camera and crew for the first time in close to ten years. John had told me that he had regained the ability to move his legs, but I had grossly underestimated how much function John had regained.

During the interview, John was asked to show how he manages to get out of bed now and he transferred with ease both in and out of bed, leaning back and lifting his legs. He was then asked to raise his legs while lying on the bed and he obliged with ease. When asked if he could feel when touched on his legs, he replied my legs feel like normal legs instead of heavy weights. John then went on to explain how much of the swelling in his legs had gone-and that this flies in the face of the current act of elevating the legs above the heart. Advise from the medical profession, which John duly ignored in favour of sleeping with his legs down.

Fortunately for John this meant that he could now wear ankle braces and special shoes, which would, provided support for his substantially weakened and as yet unresponsive ankles.

John approached the parallel bars in his wheel chair and applied the brakes when he was in position. He grasped the two ends of the parallel bars and using his legs he pushed himself into a vertical position. Towering some six feet four inches, John moved one leg in front of the other, bending the knees as he lifted each leg to walk 12 feet to the end of the bars. I turned and looked at Tim and saw disbelief and astonishment flash across his face, I bet my face was a sight to behold too. John then turned his powerful 19 stone body around and walked, yes walked back to his chair. Struggling and somewhat weakened by the experience, he lowered his body into the chair and his face had the expression of a boxer who had just knocked down his opponent. He said casually: 'Was that alright'? John had indeed delivered a powerful blow to his opponent.
Fortunately heavy rain prevented us from doing a retake and the rest of the interview took place in John's bedroom.

When the story was finished and everyone was ready to leave, I turned and thanked the camera man and Tim Iredale, who turned and said that this is one of those days that you will always remember, one of those days when you know exactly what you were doing.

The cameraman said while shaking my hand that: ' it has been a privilege to work with me and witness the results from such a simple application'.

I drove home the richest man alive that day and will remember it for the rest of my days.

On Monday the 17th April 2000 I waited for the local news on Carlton TV and saw the opening news which pictured me looking down my Naturesway Sleep System, a simple bed designed for to take us into the new millennium. After the interlude the fun really started. John was walking for everyone in the South West of England to see, at least. The news stayed focused on the remarkable effects of two eight-inch blocks tucked under the head end of John's bed. No $billion research, no waiting for the next ten years to see if it works and no room for any refutation of the results, which were plain for everyone to see on Carlton Television, News, Language Science Park, Plympton, Plymouth, Devon, UK. But John is not the only person with a spinal cord injury, who is benefiting from the effects of gravity, in fact there are two more people in the Torbay Area of Devon who are making steady progress.

Sunday Independent  April 16th,2000  page 4 Burrington Way, Plymouth PL5 3LN  UK

Heading:   RAISING HIS BED TOWARDS THE SKIES, BY ANTHONY ABBOTT.

WHEELCHAIR-BOUND  Julian Boustead is taking to the skies for a parachute jump to raise awareness about a simple bed treatment that's given him a new lease of life.
The 37 year old - who was left paralysed after breaking his neck during a charity assault course run. Struggling to get out of bed in the morning and always felt the cold until he took the simple step of raising the head of his bed on blocks of wood by a matter of inches. Julian, who lives near Torquay, has urged everyone to try the Naturesway Sleep System, Pioneered by West-Country Inventor Andrew Fletcher, and first revealed in the Sunday Independent nearly three years ago.
He said; 'I used to feel dizzy when I got up and I couldn't stay outdoors for long because I always felt the cold. 'After the first night, I got out of bed straight away with the help of the nurses and I did not feel faint, My circulation has also improved. I would never put the bed back again and all my family are sleeping on raised beds.'
Now Julian, a former professional boxer and equestrian expert who still teaches youngsters riding, has premised Andrew Fletcher he will do a parachute jump this summer to show other sufferers the benefit of the bed treatment.

Julian Colour Picture: Sub heading: Wheelchair-bound Julian Boustead will jump from the skies this summer.  Picture Steve Porter

It was former engineer Andrew who contacted Julian two years ago after learning of his plight and suggested he tried the bed method.

Gravity

Andrew was fascinated by the way water moved up trees through roots and wandered how the gravity and the flow of water would effect the human body.
He put some bricks under the head of his own bed and within four weeks, his wife's varicose veins had disappeared. Since then he has discovered his treatment has helped MS sufferers get some feeling back in their legs and arthritis sufferers.

John's story

In 1990 I had two slipped discs, and had a lamenectomy which ended up with
me being unable to walk. It is thought that a delay of 39 hours for surgery to what was found to be a compression of the spinal cord was responsible for my paralysis.
I was lucky enough to get a bed at ROOKWOOD Hospital, a place that I cannot
thank or speak highly enough of, they gave me back the will to live.

After two years all the slow progress stopped as I had been informed to expect. I
had no feeling from the hips down and no movement of the legs at all. Luckily my
arms were o.k so transfers to the wheelchair were more of a throw which usually
ended with my coccyx hitting the wheel, but as there was no feeling, so it didn't
bother me too much. After a few months came the most horrendous phantom pains
like a knife attached to the mains that struck anywhere in the legs or feet, for
this I was on strong painkillers or if it was too bad injections.
When driving my car around a corner, I had to wedge my head against the roof of the car to stop my body from falling over. This was due to damage to the nerves, which used to control the nerves which held my upper body erect, something I used to take for granted as everyone else does.
Getting into bed would involve tremendous effort. I would throw my rear onto the bed and then with my right hand holding the wheel, I would pull my left leg up, with my left hand, holding my trouser leg. Then holding the bedding with my left hand, I would pull my right leg up with my right hand. At one stage I had even asked for my legs to be amputated, as they were useless and hung heavily. In addition my toenails would fall out on a regular basis, predominantly the big toe nails, often coming away when I removed my socks.

I often bumped my coccyx while transferring from my wheelchair, though I could not tell if I had injured myself, due to the absence of pain.

About two years ago a cutting from a paper was sent to me, it was about Andrew
Fletcher's raised bed. I rang Andrew and he explained his theory and told me how
to raise the bed. The bed was raised eight inches that day, when I saw the bed
it looked impossible not to end up on the floor at the foot. However that night
was wonderful, the phantom pains stopped and I had a full nights sleep. Slowly
things started to improve, improvements such as instead of having to grab my sock
or trouser leg to lift my legs onto the bed I could lean back and swing them up, muscles in
my thighs started to twitch, turning over in bed became possible without having to
grab the side of the bed and pull myself over, not having to pull my legs over
 by hand.
I have experienced so many improvements that creep up and are not noticed until days
 later.

Pains started again and I thought here we go again, but it soon became obvious
to me that it was nerve regeneration pains that I was experiencing. Although they felt like
previous pains, these stayed in the same place anything from six to twenty four hours.
The next time the pains moved further down the leg, now I am glad to say those
pains have gone the last ones were in my toes. The present pains are in the
feet again but generated from the nerve that runs under the buttocks, now the
feeling has come back to that area it makes sitting in the wheelchair most
uncomfortable, but that is the next problem to get over, but I will, in the knowledge
that something else will improve when the new pains subside.

Now, what I would like to say to everyone who reads this is; if you have any medical problem try it, and more importantly "stick with it"!
Most of all have faith in the healing power of gravity, it has worked for me, AND WHEN I WALK AGAIN!
I will first thank Andrew, and secondly I will let everyone that reads this web page know about it.

 John Cann

Terrific! So glad you found the backing you were looking for!

MEDICAL BREAKTHROUGH: Andrew Fletcher’s bed treatment will now be fully investigated. Picture: Steve Porter
HEALTH ministers have pledged to look into the benefits of a simple bed treatment, pioneered by a West Country man, which is having a dramatic effect on spinal injury and multiple sclerosis sufferers, writes ANTHONY ABBOTT.
It marks a real breakthrough in Andrew Fletcher’s five-year battle to gain official recognition for the Naturesway Sleep System that appears to be succeeding where conventional medicine has failed.
Thanks to the backing of Torbay MP Adrian Sanders, Andrew, who lives in Torquay, has received a letter from the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department of Health, Lord Philip Hunt, saying officials will examine the benefits of the gravity bed.
The Minister said that the Government was always interested in developments that might lead to improved care for patients.
Andrew said: ‘This is long overdue. It is absolutely incredible to me to think that there is something here that doesn’t cost anything and I can’t understand for the life of me why everyone isn’t doing it.’
First revealed in theSunday Independentthree years ago, the Naturesway Sleep System involves raising the bed a few inches with blocks of wood or ordinary house bricks.
The discovery followed several experiments by Andrew who found there was a circuit which made water carrying salt and nutrients flow upwards. He wondered how gravity and the flow of water would affect the human body. Andrew set up a controlled study on the Internet and scores of sufferers around the world found their condition improved with the treatment.
The web-site features scores of testimonies praising the gravity bed method and Andrew has now been asked to organise a convention in Torbay next year.

Of the many people who have enjoyed improvements in their health using the gravity bed, none was more dramatic than the case of 69-year-old John Cann.
The former commercial diver had no feeling in his legs for eight years after an operation went wrong and left him paralysed.
He was told that, however much movement he had after two years, there would be no further improvement, but then he tried raising his bed and the results were spectacular.
When John, from Gunnislake, was first featured in the Indy last April he had got the feeling back in his legs and was able to stand. But now, just five months on, a delighted John is walking further with the help of parallel bars and is determined to get on to crutches as soon as possible.
He is getting some specially made boots to support his ankles and says he has never felt better.
He said: ‘I am getting stronger and stronger every day and the only thing that’s holding me back now is my ankles and my knees.’
John, who lives alone, is noticing more and more feeling in his legs as the nerves recover and his long term aim is to walk unaided

Being from the USA, I have plenty of grumbles today.

We have an epidemic of non-scientists thinking they know better than scientists. In America, if you know nothing about atmospheric science you are well qualified to state that global warming is an imaginary phenomenon. If you are a priest or minister, you are well qualified to state that Darwin was a liar and that evolution is still a "theory" rather than a fact. And if you happen to be a former oil company executive working in the White House, you are well qualified to edit and re-write scientific reports to leave out the naughty items about pollution and climate change. I do not make up any of this- that last item was in the news recently, the gentleman resigned and went back to his oil executive job after the embarrassment.

Oh yes, I suppose we could rectify that by getting a new President but that will have to wait for 2008.

This epidemic of 'horizontalism' as it has been termed (where everyone's views are of equal importance, no matter how ill-judged, uninformed or unsubstantiated) is a product of this 'political correctness' obsessed society that is the west today.

Experts have been systematically eroded in status and the concept of someone knowing more than someone else, being more intelligent that someone else, or more successful than someone else is all terribly unfair and should be avoided at all costs. Consultations with the doctor should, of course, be 'patient led' with patients having the option to make an 'informed choice' about the best way to manage their problem. All well and good, but taking it to extremes, how can someone make a genuinely 'informed choice' about their management if they've not been to medical school ?

Tony Blair has decided that patients should be able to choose which hospital they want to go to to have their hip replacement. Sorry Tony, but most patients would rather that you spent the milions you're frittering on this 'garnish' on replacing their hips more quickly in the first place.

It's all crap and will become a victim of its own good intention. As someone said to me the other day when they were admitted to casualty in excrutiating pain with a kidney stone and the medical staff had started running through a list of 'management options' and side effects of different drugs he said "i don't give a sh!t what you do, just treat me !"

Sorry Chris, I thought this was a place to vent ones own personal grumbles and moans. This is my own grumble about the inherant lack of compassion in established health authorites and charities, who will inevitably carry on promoting illnesses far more than they will ever investigate viable methods to alleviate the often life threatening conditions they use to front their multi-million pound industries.

Have you seen where all of the Tsunami Money has been used? I am damned if I can see anything that remotely reflects the massive amount of money generated by the appeal. Maybe the new prime realestate owned by Oxfam can reflect the hundreds of millions that are quietly being wittled away, now that the allseeing media eye  has been once again diverted?[V]

The use of the word Basically, where did it come from, it has spread like a disease and is absolutely useless in the english language. I abhor its use, I believe it is nothing more than a pause in a conversation and anyone using it should be blind folded put up against a wall and have their feet tickled untill they pee themselves. Maybe its a replacement for a swearword? But its spread to every corner of the world like a disease on the winds.

Judge Judy has already begun to prevent the people in her court room from using it. My family have launched an impressive attack on anyone that dares to uter it in our company. But I fear we are too late to save our son James. He has become heavilly contaminated by this verbal virus or bullish bacterium. Has anyone found an antidote,

Spot on !

An English teacher cured our class of this affliction when we were all about 13 by jumping down anyone's throat who uttered it.

His stance was that it is basically (!) a bubblegum word - it just fills your mouth and exercises your jaw muscles without imparting anything useful to your or anyone else's body !

I hate it. Have you noticed how the people who tend to use 'basically' are often already about as basic in terms of their cognitive abilities as it is possible to become, so the suggestion that they are in some way simplifying the conversation to make their profound knowledge more comprehensible for the rest of the world is quite frankly laughable !

Wah [:p] I say basically... but only if I’ve just said something that the person I’m talking to didn't get, suppose I could say "In simpler terms" but isn't that a bit formal? I do know what you mean though... basically some people just put it in a sentence to basically pause instead of basically ummming or arrring [:D]. It's annoying when anyone uses the same word over and over. My physics teacher used to say "Right (neh)Ok..." the neh is because he was Welsh and it was so distracting I couldn't keep track of what he was trying to say. Sometimes he would even say it in quick succession [xx(] Right Ok... Right NehnehOhhhKaaayyyy OK. One time I said "yeah it is noookey Sir" this was just before he banned me from his class for 2 months for not doing any work [|)].

Other such words:
innit
like
eh (as in the Canadian style)
[V] the more I think about it the more there are, it's not worth listing [:D]

"I was like...whatever"

WTF does this mean other than "I've got nothing sensible to offer to the conversation except the sound of my own voice !"

Hi Chris, I'm sitting here with a green T shirt which has the word "Whatever" torn out and sewn. Whatever is my favourite word, though I seldom have to say it because I wear it most of the time :)

Whatever to me is a polite way of saying “who cares”? To those I can't be bothered to engage in conversation, or even used to diffuse an argument as it often stops people in their tracks that are on a roll of verbal diarrhoea, showing your total disinterest in a single word.

So please don’t send this word to room 101, along with the B word.

my personal grumble at the moment is political correctness. It has the aim of taking sensitive issues and damping them down, but instead seems to highlights these issues and make them bigger than they should be.

example. if we all just forgot about racism maybe it would slowly die out? rather that harping on about it all the time, for example making companies hire a certain percent of staff from ethnic minorities just generates bad feeling (among the candidates that are more highly qualified but have the disadvantage of being white, but didn't get the job because the 'quota' of minorities hasn't been met this month) and hence breeds the very thing its trying to stop. why not just employ the best person for the job? who cares what colour their skin is?

since when did we need politicians to tell us whether what we say is acceptable or not anyway? surely we can work that kind of thing out for ourselves? or maybe we can't. if general manners and tolerance were taught at school then the kids of today (and I'm not actually that old) would be able to do this for themselves.

Hi everyone, my wife asks if I am going to grump again, so I might be qualitifed. I don't like doctors either, mine tried to kill me three times before I gave up on him. But the salesman who thought to post his snake oil pitch here is more than enough cause to grump.
The science behind selling snakeoil is simple:

1) people spontaniously get well or get worse. Use the optomistic point of view and forget those who get worse.
2) People want to get well and will even believe they are better from a treatment when they arn't.
3) If it taste evil, it has to be good for you. (The opinion of Tom Sawyers's aunt).
4) Why would he lie to me?
5) He is such a nice person, and I think he likes me.
6) He went to school and must know more than I do.

And of course the main reason: It works. No he don't mean people get well, he mean he make a lot of money...

The worst part of it is those dang optimists do live longer than grumps like me.

David

The idea of something being "penultimate" pisses me off. So what??? it's second from last, who cares what’s special about that!

Another thing I adamantly fight for is a metric day! I see no reason not to have a metric day. I understand we can’t take the metric system much further than that since days and months relate to periods of light and dark. Come on lets all meet at the 10th centiday to fight for this!

it doesn't help that the ones that are allowed to work often don't seem to want to. have a relative who works in a job centre who fumes over that one! trouble is they soon work out that the government will just give them a better standard of living that what they had to work really had for in their country of origin. I know I'm generalising here, so apologies to any immigrants who work hard for an honest living! I think our immigration policy should be more like Australia's.

Your going to turkey if I remember correctly. I came back from alanya on the SE coast today.
It was the best holiday i've had in a long time.[:)]  Temperatures hover between 40 and 45 degrees  [8D]. Its hot but its different to the heat we get. and if you do get hot then join all the topless women in and around the pool (WICKED)[:p] Always watch out for your mum or sisters at 430 pm if your on the beach.  Thats when the local men come down looking for women, .
Take lots of money for the fake designer gear in the markets (Turkey is home to the best fakes in the world, it is impossible to tell the difference from the genuine article.
Dont forget to haggle,  if they want 60 offer 20 never go over 25. I spent £350 on designer gear worth £2000[:D]
The only thing that i hated about turkey is you cant flush your loo paper down the toilet
you have to deposit it into a bin beside the loo, so watch what you eat or things can become very messy.[:I]
( especially if you've had a few drinks and you cordination has flown out the window)

PS DONT DRINK THE TAP WATER

NLJB,

Visit India and step over the 5 year old kids sleeping in the streets, or see the old man looking into a restaurant display and knowing he can't afford anything in there. Sit on a skateboard because you have no legs and beg for money. Everyone of those people I met would  consider themselves to be rich to live in the United States. You are just spoiled because you never have been truly poor.

Free? There is no place where you are totally free. Everyplace has rules. Here in the US at least, you don't get killed for disliking the country's leader. Go down to Cuba and sound off about Castro and see what happens - a nice jail cell. Then maybe you will begin to understand how precious little freedom there is in this world where less than half of the countries are not run by dictators, and where economic success, though not guaranteed, is less punished in this country through taxation than any other free county. So here you have more freedom and more chance of success. To gripe that life isn't fair is understandable, but it wasn't exactly fair to the old man on the skateboard either.

As far as gas attendants, I have been there and done that. It paid for two semesters of college, and I got to meet all kinds of people and practice my smile [:D]

If you want to judge the character of a man, see how he treats those who serve him.

Parents and relatives of children in India and other Eastern Countries that deliberately disable and maim children in order to get them out on the streets begging for money. And more to the point, The Westerners who give money to the parents through the often horrendously disfigured and disabled children, rewarding them for their inhumain and barbaric selfish practices. Stop giving money to these unfortunate children and the bastards that cripple these kids will have no reason to do so in the future!
