Title: Picked Onion/Cucumber Vinegar- Uses for ?
Post by: neilep on 28/04/2006 22:40:51
I just can't seem to locate the Food forum anywhere so am posting this here.

I'm not a skinflint but do like to make things stretch  because I just HATE waste, especially food !...and as I was finishing the last cucumber from the pickled jar today I was wondering:

1: Could I have used the vinegar on my chips (french fries) ?

2: Would I have had to still refrigerate it if I did or was the refrigeration purely for the cucumbers ?

3: Are there any real serious other uses for this pickled concoction of liquid tangy joy ?

Thanks

Neil

Mr. ep,

I would think it would be fine on chips as I will often get a fish and "chips" plus a cole slaw (a mayo and cabbage based salad) at a franchise in the US named ---- ---- Silver's. I will have a Polish Dill with this, using the pickle juice for the fish, etc.

As for refigeration, I would guess 'tis needed as the reason for putting the pickles in the fridge in the first place is that vinegar alone will not turn cloudy under normal conditions, but will turn cloudy after spices and other solids are added to it. (At least, it is what I have been told in a elimentary chemistry class.)

As for other things, I use it to spice up tuna fish salad and other seafood. If it is put in catsup, it makes a half way decent shrimp sauce. (I like to eat, can you tell?)

Also, how about pouring it over ice cream?  "... do like to make things stretch ..."

Mr JB,

May I present my condiments of the season to you.[:)]

Your recommendations are warmly received.

Hmmm.. ' Silvers '  sounds like a veritable font of palatable palatial scrumptious-ness....

...Will they deliver ?

..this cole slaw you mention sounds intriguing !..a mayo and cabbage based salad eh ?...who would have thought of such a thing ?........to make things even more bizarre one might consider the absurd notion of adding sliced carrot and onion !!...oh..but that would just be ludicrous ! [;)]

As for the ice cream !!..LOL..Thanks JB !![:D]

..oh and yes I'm preggers alright !...I  must be.......Mornings make me feel sick !! [;)]

Hey Neil try adding a bit of pickle juice to your potato salad. It is quite good as are the diced pickles, celery ect. You know the normal stuff, just add the juice before the mayo and mustard so you don't make it runny! You might have already tried this but if not it is very good!
Hey do you like just dills or  sweet pickles also. This is simple sounds weird, but it is very good. It is a very plain  mayonaise and sweet pickle sandwhich. Crunchy and delicious. One of the rare times I eat mayonaise! I like it best On white bread. Also the only time I eat white bread per say. About once a year or so I just have to have one. My Grandma used to make them for us as children. They are surprisingly good. Try one, you might be amazed! Slice the pickles length wise and lay them across a piece of the mayonaised  bread.Slap on a top piece with just a nice thin spreading of mayo, not thick, unless you like mayo alot! Thats it!

Here is a book with 400 uses for vinegar:-

http://www.vinegarbook.co.uk/vinegar_tips_for_cleaning.shtml

You could use your onoiny vinegar to remove limescale from the toilet bowl,
but not from the kettle, (unless you like tangy tea  [:)]).

Vinegar is death for rust on metal. Old rusty tool soaked for a day or two in vinegar then brush off and clean. Re-lube your tool with penetrating oil, or wd-40. Works like a charm on tools! And Neil keep your mind out of the gutter! I realize where my last comment could lead!
I am not sure how the pickle juice would react as it has other spices in it.

Sir, if you continue on calling me young lady, I might just completely melt into mush!  I have felt so OLD lately and I don't know if it was the weight or the weight of other things, But thanks for such a sweet phrase, you never know what is going to set your bells to ringing! And frankly if thats all it takes to ring my bells I might be in deeper trouble then I had first thought! Thanks Friend

I miss your lovely orange font, Quite refreshing as you are! Hey Neil, is it possible to preset my font color to a certain color, so you don't have to do it each time you post? Say green like my favorite color![:)][^]

Mam, thank you for your lovely words...

...unfortunately it is not possible to pre-set the colour/color of the font to use in posts....

...that would be cool though, but I don't know of any forum that allows for this...young lady !![;)]

Well it didn't hurt to ask![;)] So glad to see your nice orange is back! I had no idea weather it was possible since TNS forum is the only one I have really ever been in. I may have inquired in another a long time ago, but I think it was more or less a chatroom and it was not my cup of tea. Things were pretty raw in there and I did not like the feelings that I picked up there, so Your Forum has been blessed with my rather unusual presence![^] I feel very lucky to have found a site with such outstanding members and moderators who actually give a darn about making sure the site is a place people feel welcomed and safe! [:D] I have never felt so able to ask a question or join in a adult conversation and feel I had anything at all to offer or to learn! Its a great stress release and you all have become very dear to my heart![:)][:)] I feel human again and I know there is humanity in this world, you just have to look in the right places to find it!

Ok Neil, Save your pickle juice and add several sliced up jalopeno peppers and some peeled and smooshed garlic cloves to the juice. Then add hard boiled eggs, peeled of coarse. Put them in the jar after they have finished boiling and have cooled off. Then leave them in the refridgerator for about three weeks! Take the lid off and pull out one of your eggs, you will love them. Just don't eat tons, not great for cholesterol, you know. But okay If you substitute this for your protein in one meal.  A little spicey bit of heaven!......Karen

I just love the pickled veges. my mum used to make every autumn in preparation for Xmas - celery, peppers, artichokes and gherkins with herbs and spices all arranged neatly in tall glass containers (from old sweet shops.

Pickled eggs - er no.

Love you lots.
