I went to UMIST which is the Science and Technology arm of Manchester University. I never thought of the place as being a high quality University until it came to the graduation ceremony. My gown was trimmed with gold and ermin. When everyone wore it I didn't feel so silly but when I did my PGCE (Teachers certificate) I had to wear my university gown again. Most people had very simple gowns with a blue trim or a red trim. I turned up looking like a member of the royal family. Everyone kept asking "where the hell did you go to university?"
So was I the only one with an extreme gown? what is your graduation gown like?

Actually, Our graduation gowns are very much like the Tudor outfit above.
Burnt Orange and White are the Texas colors. We also did not have the "Mortar Board" caps.

Yes, mine looked just like that, with the ermin and everything. I'm sure other people have sillier ones. What are the Cambridge ones like?

That is why I am asking. Do the top universities have the most elaborate gowns?

My (commoner's rather than graduate's) gown looks like a torn black pillowcase with a couple of ribbons.

However the graduate's gowns do seem a bit more substantial

That's Oxford, does "the other place" have an equivalent to slapdashandwayward?
