Title: What are whitings and how do they originate?

Any carbonate guru's (or, as Neil would say, "Whitingologists") out there that have any idea as to the cause of whitings?  We went over them in class, but the instructor basically said that their cause is a mystery.

Nanobcteria - or as the scientist who first described them spells it, nannobacteria.

Is there any other reason for carbonates??????? (That is, according to R. L. Folk, Dave P. Carlton Centennial Professor Emeritus in Geology, PHD, Jackson School of Geoscience, The University of Texas at Austin, The Republic of Texas)

I still havent been able to make it by Dr. Folks office (nor Dr. Fishers for that matter).  I need to remember to do that next week. 

Nannobacteria (from the limited info that I know) would seem to make sense.  A bit like algal blooms, but with aragonitic bacteria?
