Why can we not sit still?

Why can we not sit still? [
] I don't know about you but if I am sitting down and reading a book or listening to music or something, I am constantly tapping my feet, moving my legs, tapping my fingers etc... [
]
It appears that if there isn't a strong enough stimili, I can never sit still!! [
]
Would it not make more sense to stay still to conserve energy?? [

What would qualify as a strong enough stimuli to get you to be still???

I'm putting all of it down to pressure. Even the slightest movement changes muscle position maybe enough to relieve a bit of pressure.
or
you like to fidget. Some people seem to be able to concentrate better when other parts of their body are doing repetitive stuff...
when you listen to music, I'd be amazed if one didn't tap feet or snap fingers or move in some way.

Even now reading these comments my feet are moving up and down! [
]
Is it possible that all of the fidgeting is to stay alert?
E.g. Our ancestors eating potatoes and tapping their legs together so they can escape when the hungry human and potato eating creature got ready to pounce? [

My son had trouble with being fidgety... constantly moving...he takes afer me..I actually get more fidgety when I am tired.....when I need sleep..I think it is unconscous thing for years...I litterally half o be still and fight the fidgets o finally get to sleep.. he would do the same right off till he literally within a second drop off to sleep.

Johns Doctor said he had passive ADHD.... BUT IT WAS PASSIVE LAZINESS WITH SOME LEARNING DISABILITIES....
He has way surpassed Doctor expectations for him.
He is fine....

Well I wouldn't call it fidgeting as such but I just moticed that I was making all these unnecessary movements, and I just wondered why we aren't controlled sub-consciously to stay still. [
]

I'll most likely stay still if I am reading a good book, otherwise, I'll still have to keep an eye on it because I only really noticed this yesterday. [

I'm thinking that a monk might be able to achieve sitting still on wii fit. I stand on it and have a fairly good COG... but wii fit demonstrates to us two things..
1. it's easy to cheat
and
2. you don't need any equipment to get a decent workout.
