Kids eh ?....don't you just love em ?...
My eldest just asked me " Daddy, what happens if you put a vacuum cleaner in a vacuum and turn it on ?"...
" well, first you have to find a dirty carpet in space and then we'll find out " came my reply followed by..."well Son, I think the motor would turn and that's about it...there'll be no suction !...likewise..a hairdryer will probably just get hot and melt..."
Am I right ?....
Blow me down with your answers of house utensil goodness and bring joy and laughter to an eleven year old boy !
Men are the same as women.... just inside out !!

I'd guess that to be pretty much right.
A vacuum cleaner relies on outside air pressure to drive air through it. No outside air pressure, then no air flow.
Since, I suspect, most vacuum cleaners also rely on air flow to cool the drive motor, you will get a very hot drive motor with a very short life span.

Thank you George for your affirmation of the facts.
Well, that was short and sweet.
Thanks again.
