Title: Hello.............
Post by: Karen W. on 13/09/2006 15:19:56
Is everyone having computer problems? I am wondering with all the computer problems, what is the difference in Broad Band and DSL?
Faster etc?I have a dial up, and very rarely have problems with it..although it is much slower to open pages and download...it is pretty reliable! Is it possible to install a modem in your computer for backup purposes when your brodband or dsl is down? You know so you can just use a dial up service when yours are out. I know that modems are pretty cheap as I replaced one recently and installed it myself..pretty easy!

From what I can gather the problem appears to be with ADSL and not DSL (cable) broadband. Both George and Neil have ADSL broadband over a telephone line, that was recently upgraded. The reliability subsequently went haywire. DSL broadband, which I am using at the moment, appears to be unaffected.

Hi Karen

DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Loop. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DSL.

ADSL is Asynchronous Dialer Subscriber Line, a form of DSL over telephone wires. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ADSL

In regular speak, if your broadband is fibre-optic cable then it is usually DSL and is a separate line from your telephone. If your broaddband connection is ADSL then it is via your regular telephone line (copper wires), though using a different frequency from voice transmission. Dial-up will be over your regular telephone line.

The problem, I think, is that the ADSL providers in the UK are using BT telephone lines and the new upgrade facilities provided by BT to the broadband providers may not be stable. As the cable companies own their own network they have more control over the facilities.

Btw, Neil's e-mail seems to be working on and off today, but more off than on.

Hi Neil, might be worth you trying a new modem. Seems to be doing the trick (for the moment) for our favourite George (or am I just biased?). Something to do with older ones not actually being able to cope with the upgraded 8mb despite supposedly being able to!

Hi Gaia,

Thanks Mam...My modem is actually less than a year old, it's a current model.

I have today received an email from Pipex and  boy do they want me to try a whole load of procedures which I will reluctantly follow , but only after I have received a whole new batch of micro-filters which I really really hope will cure the problem.

Yes, it's good to see Georgy up and running with apparent stability...YAYYYYYYYYYY !!

The main difference between DSL and ADSL is that DSL was a term more commonly used in the USA, but both are generally used to mean the same thing.

As you say, ADSL is a form of DSL (the other is gradually becoming known as SDSL, but is still expensive and targeted at the business market rather than the home market).

'Broadband' is a very generic term that is more marketing speak for any high speed consumer Internet connection.

Cable modems are another form of broadband (used to transmit Internet signals along the cable TV infrastructure rather than the telephone infrastructure), but seems to be losing favour in this country (even by the cable companies) in favour of ADSL.

Yes, one can have a modem backup alongside the broadband connection (in fact one of my routers actually has a serial port to specially allow for this fall-back option).  My present problem is that the UK telephone systems are designed to work with a limit of 4 RENs (that for most purposes means that it can connect 4 telephone handsets, or modems, or answering machines), and I already have 3 handsets and one answering machine connected to the line, so I do not have the capacity to connect the modem as well.  In the days that I used to regularly use dial-up modems, I had a second telephone line onto which was attached only one handset and the modem, but when I went over to ADSL I had the second telephone line disconnected.

Hey George, Thanks for the information, much more clear! I tried to see if we could get it upgraded a year or so ago, no can do as we don't have the currant upgrades in my area to do it through the phone company.. The cable company we had dsl for awhile but hubby said it was to expensive... He doesn't woork during the winter, I do and my income and his unemployment is what we live on in the winter while I am in school. so combined with tuition and house payments and cost of living he feels it is an extravagance we don't need.... I could probably sell a couple boxes of his beer and pay for it every month, but of coarse those are neccessaties LOL!
