Title: Why Does Venus Spin The Other Way Round ?...and other rotational questions !
Post by: neilep on 20/09/2016 12:26:34
Dearest Planetary Spinologists,

I just found out that Venus spins clockwise, contrary to the rest of the planets with the exception also of Uranus.

I am not happy about this !!..what makes venus so special ?  So, off i went and tried to put Venus in it's place
but, just like the stubborn black hole who refused to give me it's temperature, Venus was not playing ball !
I am getting well and truly fed up of these obstinate cosmological bodies !!...

Why does Venus spin clockwise ?

hugs and shmishes

Additional kweschns:

does our galaxy revolve anti clockwise ?

Do most galaxies revolve the same direction ?

Does the Universe revolve ? Hang on !...is that a silly question ?  because I assume that if the universe revolves does it not need then be inside/part of something to action the rotation ?

It spins because there is a magnetic link between planet and the sun/star.  Faradays law of rotation if flux/amps field is at right angles to the voltage.

In the early ages of the solar system there was a lot of interaction between the planets including collisions ,the other anomalous one is Uranus that spins on its side

Thank ewe acsinuk..So the planets spin predominantly the same way because they are linked to the way the sun spins and the same for the direction of orbit then  ?

thank ewe syhprum  Apparently the non-planet Pluto also spins clockwise.

Uranus, that must have been a bad hair day  on the day of that collision !

The Galaxy Zoo citizen science project asked people if they could tell whether a galaxy was spinning clockwise or anticlockwise, and they did find a bias.

But when they randomised the images (by flipping the image horizontally or vertically), they found the bias disappeared. So it seems that the bias is mental, rather than physical.

If the universe is spinning, could we even tell ?
