Title: Does milk reduce the health-benefits of tea?
Post by: thedoc on 06/10/2012 09:30:02
Rick asked the Naked Scientists:

I have been wondering for a while about the effect of milk and milk based products on the bio availability of some or all anti-oxidants in food and beverages.

Some years ago you had a guest Roger Corder, I think, and he had written a book and in it he stated that the cassein- phosphopeptides of milk in tea may envelope polyphenols and flavanoids etc and make them inactive.

Is this a fact that has been proven or is it more anectdotal?

If it is true does milk based products affect other antioxidant chemicals in the same way.

As much as I try I cannot have my tea or coffee without milk...

What do you think?

I'm not certain, and I haven't done any research, but I rather suspect that the phosphopeptides in milk would get digested  which would release the polyphenols

Hi friends,
Tea is loaded with antioxidants called catechins, whether its black tea, green tea etc. Previous research showed that drinking tea improves blood flow significantly, as compared to drinking plain water. But when we add milk in tea, showed that is completely blocked the antioxidant benefits of improved blood flow. Turns out that the casein in milk significantly decrease the presence of catechins in tea.

Be assured that whatever you eat or drink, some charlatan has written a book explaining why it's bad for your health.

Be assured that whatever you eat or drink, some charlatan has written a book explaining why it's bad for your health.
And another one has written a different book saying how it's good for you.

When I was a kid, milk and butter were good for you. Then they were bad, and margarine was good. Then marge was bad but skimmed milk (expensive water) was OK. Then full-fat milk and butter were OK. Now it's "oat milk" - weak porridge emulsified with sunflower oil, i.e. expensive water plus margarine......

It's worth remembering that "five a day" was invented, not by medics or dieticians, but by the California Fruit Growers' Association.

Life is short, and enjoyable life is seriously shortened by people who tell you what is good for you.
