Title: Why do I have multi-coloured hair?
Post by: thedoc on 20/11/2014 16:30:02
Jule Eberle asked the Naked Scientists:

I have multicolored hair, always have, from a very light blond to a blond to a reddish,  to kind of a reddish brown at the back of my neck. When I braid my hair It is beautiful as each strand definitions colors, my eye lashes are the same which is a pain in the butt...they go from dark to very light, they are long but you cannot tell...I am now 54 and my hair is almost the same with a few changes...but has been this way since I noticed it at aged nine. People have always asked me how I dye my hair and I have always had to show them that I don't...so i'm one calico...or tortoise that is actually true to be and alive and well.

What do you think?

Different colours = Heterochromia .

Heterochromia of the hair is described as the growth of hair with two distinct colours in the same person. When the distribution of the different-coloured hair is symmetric (e.g., lighter hair on the underarms, a red moustache on a person with otherwise brown hair), heterochromia of the hair is often physiologic. However, when heterochromia is asymmetrically distributed, it reflects a pigmentation disorder, which may have a genetic basis.

Having looked at dogs, cats, tigers, zebras.... one wonders instead why apes tend to be monochromatic!

I'm not sure why, but it appears that men's facial hair is particularly heterochromic. I have brown hair, and while my beard is mostly brown, it has hairs all the way from platinum blonde to black, with a few bright red ones here and there... go figure!
