Post by: Hadrian on 25/05/2006 14:35:26
Chew on this and let me know how long dose it take to digest chewing gum?

What you do speaks so loudly that I cannot hear what you say.

Man, I have swallowed my weight in gum over the years. I have yet to see it come out in any form that I think I could make an ID on. Never had it stop me up although they say with children it can cause a problem if enough is swallowed. So I can't say how long digestion of gum takes. , although as a child my mother would say don't swallow your gum, it wii stay in your tummy for seven years. I think she was trying to scare us. ......Karen

"Almost everyone has swallowed a piece of gum, but few kids have ever needed a doctor because of it. You might have heard that swallowed gum stays in your stomach for 7 years. That's not true. Though your stomach can't break down a piece of gum the same way it breaks down other food, your digestive system can move it along through normal intestinal activity. In other words, it comes out the other end when you have a bowel movement.

When Is Swallowed Gum a Problem?
Swallowing a large mass of gum, or many small pieces of gum over a short period of time, can block the digestive tract in rare cases. Blockage is most likely when gum is swallowed along with foreign objects, like coins, or when swallowed with nondigestible materials like sunflower seeds.

Little kids are most likely to be affected because they might not understand that gum is chewed, not swallowed.

But apart from these strange scenarios, swallowing an occasional piece of gum is harmless. "

Doctor: "How is the little boy who swallowed the pound coin?"
Nurse : "No change yet, doctor!"

Thats cute, and I am glad to know that I won't soon be having to visit the doc! I cannot count how many times a teacher has said, are you chewing gum, and I swallowed and said who me, no!

Man I swallowed a piece the other day for the lack of a garbage can!
