Title: Do You Have Liberal Or Conservative Values...?
Post by: Titanscape on 21/02/2009 07:26:28
Hi, I am interested in finding where people stand in life, on values, beliefs, ethics, politics, thinking about science, and relationships, honour, justice, appetites...

Hope you will vote and give a point of view.

People who know me would say that I'm liberal in the way that I think about practically everything.

I find it very hard to place myself on the political spectrum. I believe in minimal state interference in everyday life (I abhor the nanny state) but I have a liberal social conscience. I don't want the state poking its nose into my affairs willy-nilly, but I do think that help should be there for those that need it. At the moment in the UK we have a government that wants more & more control and that seems incapable of comprehending that some people do not actually need nor want support & help. I find that attitude reprehensible and insulting.

I want a government that lets me get on with my life the way I want to within the constraints of the law and societal norms and that can offer advice & guidance if and when I need it. I do not want a government that tells me what to do simply because it thinks it knows best. Can I be a liberal conservative?

^ what DoctorBeaver said.

I don't really know the definitions of each so I wouldn't know what category to place myself in.

I basically believe in using critical thinking to arrive at the best conclusion of what to do about each situation. Unless it's too hard, like eating healthy and exercising :P

I was disgusted a while ago when a politician from my country claimed that the economic downturn was due to our sins and god was wreaking his wrath through the economy. I thought I lived in a 1st world country!

I reckon politicians should need to be shown to have very good critical thinking skills before they get anywhere near parliament.

I'm clearly liberal on this, both in my personal beliefs and politically.  Being liberal, to my mind, just requires you to behave in a particular way; being conservative requires other people to behave in a particular way.

I'm not sure I agree with that.

I'm a conservative in the sense of conserving the ideals of the American Revolution.

Does this mean you think people in the so called third world don't use critical thinking and are indeed superstitious religious people?!

I think Madidus was right with what he posted. There is a lot more superstition and belief in divine retribution in 3rd World countries. Having travelled extensively in the 3rd World I can personally vouch for that. However, some of the diatribe emanating from the American Bible Belt makes me wonder.

I just wanted to point out that you can't tar everyone with the same brush, unless you have a lot of tar and a very, very big brush. Ohh and it would have to have a very long handle too.

My appetites are no so conservative, but I regard it as weakness.

I like the Liberal party here in Australia, but the economic policy is conservative, even in Labour because of the Liberal/National economic success.

If in the US, and if I had a choice between Bush and a Liberal, I'd prefer the Liberal.

I value honour and long term relationships, monogamy, I believe that the husband and wife are welded together body, heart and soul. Ethics in science is very important, and faith in Jesus according to long standing traditions, although not Catholic, but a church which began in 1906, Pentecostal.

I want to maintain the justice system, and sharpen it.

I think that people like Pink who want to save the Whales and sheep for sensitivity, but want the law to back the wrecking of parent/son/daughter relationships, in gay marriages, is an amazing overlooking of sensitivity, and relationships destroying lust and that it is greedy and unfair, on big brained organisms that feel loss. More conservatively writing, parent child relationships, are a traditional heavy matter, it is very important to protect parents rights.

Titanscape - I agree with you up to a point. I think a lot of society's problems have been caused by too liberal an approach to the family and single parenting. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying single parents are necessarily bad parents. Indeed, I know some who cope very well & their children are a credit to them. But I can't help feeling that it is beneficial to children to be raised in a loving, caring, and disciplined environment with a parent of each gender. No matter what anyone says, males and females view things differently and I think it helps a child to see that there can be 2 sides to most things.

I think also, and my own observations tend to confirm this, that it is on the disciplinary side of things that a lot of single parents fall down - especially young single parents. I do, though, fully appreciate that this is an area where a lot of mixed-gender married couples are also lax.

I'll echo that.

A superstition "is a belief or notion, not based on reason or knowledge. The word is often used pejoratively to refer to supposedly irrational beliefs of others, and its precise meaning is therefore subjective."

Thus by definition, any religion is superstition without the pejorative use intended. And I do agree with Doctor Beaver that the cultist Christians in the Bible Belt and other parts of the world are not being rational about much of anything. They expect people to deny that which makes them human, theirs desires, fears, sexuality, need for fun and games - "you can't do _____ because it is not in the Bible."  etc. as a way of controlling their actions. Organized religion was made for the benefit of the priesthood. The original Christianity had no priesthood and women served as the leaders in some places.

This does not mean that there is not value in religion. The underlying principles hold immense value for those who pursue them.

The word "holy" comes from the same Old High German root as "whole." To be holy is to be a complete human being.

As a person trying to become "whole" I am neither liberal or conservative - I Am.

To put a label on yourself is to limit yourself. Just be who you are and be your own person - don't follow the crowd or you loose your identity.

I think children should ideally have two parents living with them. This is because the little devils wear you out and you need someone else to sort them out and calm things down when you are at the end of your tether. I think lone parents have a very lonely job. It is so hard bringing the little darlings up on your own. I have to do it a lot as David travels. I'm exhausted when he comes back. If I was on my own completely I think I would be in the funny farm by now.
