So many people are excited, encouraged, saddened, etc by the movies and TV shows that we watch. And yet, these things are totally fake, and we know it, yet it cannot help but stir our natural emotions when we expose ourselves to them. Consider the profound effects caused by pronography.
The Internet is a very abstract medium. It is mostly digitalized so, who knows, you or I or anyone else might acutally be a highly sophisticated computer program.

I don't know if people are obsessed with it, but I think many people accept online "neighbors" as readily as they accept real-life next-door neighbors.
