Title: After doing alot of sports... It hurts the next morning!
Post by: Seany on 12/04/2007 21:55:43
Why is this? If I do sports and work my head off really hard.. Then I go to sleep.. The next morning, my whole body aches  all over. Any reaons for this? The muscles not being cooled down properly? Still tense?

firstly, you need to warm up and down. i used to cycle 15 miles to work and back each day then after work go for a 2 hour run. the muscles do get...technical terminology alert...buggered, especially if you are just taking up the exercise.

even athlets suffer muscle cramps and pain, although i believe mainly after a heavy work out.

Yes, so the muscles need cooling after the heavy work out in order for this not to happen?

it can still happen, but you should always warm down after any exercise. lots of stretching before and after. if you do lots of running like i used to then also eat plenty of potatoes.

Lol, that's the similarity between young uns. We're curious of everything. [:P] And anastasia is so lucky to have a father like you [:)]

And yup, carbohydrates are good for slow burning, unlike sugar, which gives a larger BOOST but doesn't last so long.

I knew that, but I thought that you mean carbohydrates help to make the pain less sore. [:D]

Probably Chris or Robert would be the best people to answer questions here, but I shall throw in what little I can guess at.

Firstly, in the short term, the main problem is with the build up of lactic acid, which is what causes the cramps - this happens when there is insufficient oxygen available to supply the muscle, and so the body uses anaerobic means to generate energy, and creates lactic acid as a byproduct.  The idea of the warm down is, I would guess, to ensure there is enough blood flowing through the muscles to make sure that the muscles get their supply of oxygen until they have come back to a resting state.

The longer term soreness I would guess to be just the muscles trying to rebuild themselves after what has been an injurious exercise regime, with the rebuilt muscles being stronger than the earlier muscles.  Since most growth happen during one sleeping hours *(this is true even of ordinary childhood growth), thus it is probably not unreasonable that this is when one feels the impact of that growth (it is also a time of reduced blood flow, and hence that too would probably make for potentially more pain - that is also why night time cramps sometimes happen).
