I am curious about how long a dream last? I think one time I read 20 seconds...but it seems like all night you are dreaming....does anyone know the answer?

I thought it was the 15 or 20 minutes while you are in the last moments before waking. I am not sure either just trying to remember also!

A dream lasts for as long as it lasts !
In reality there is no definitive length but I can tell you that a dream may last
anything from a few seconds to 45 minutes. Though the time perception in the dream
may appear far longer than this. An average nights sleep manifests about 2 hours
dreaming.
You dream during REM sleep, which occurs about every 90 minutes and it's generally
accepted that each dream sequence becomes progressively longer up to the 45 minutes.

You would think that maybe a particular physical exhaustive episode in your dream
might leave you shattered when you wake up !...great question carolyn.
I just do not know.....I never ever wake up refreshed...I wake up shattered !!

THat is cool to know as I have often wondered as some of my dreams seemed to last forever! In reality I have no way of telling how long I have been dreaming! Sometimes it feels like all night... a couple times I was able to hear like my big clock chime from the living room and then realize the time then and I was dreaming, seemed when I woke it had been 2 hours or so from the clock and I had been dreaming this dream substancily longer then before the clock chimed.. and went back to continued dreaming, until I awoke a couple hours later from that dream!! Dreams are indeed strange sometimes!

Well i used to park my car upstairs in my house by my bedroom door. And i used to get stuck on some big ball that was rolling and every time it came to the point of me being squashed the sequence would start again with me back at the top :)

MIne was when I was 18, I was working on this flower farm.. I remember we had been picking flowers in quite a bad rainstorm.. Daffodils, I recall. well in the dream.. I was running to the barn deperately trying to out run a flood.... No ordinary flood you see, but LOL a flood of cream of chicken soup!!! LOL It was flooding the farm and we were all trying to get out of the way!! LOL! It was so stupid... I had just paid my rent on the place I was living in at the time My first place alone... I had no money left to speak of for groceries So for two weeks, I ate cream of chicken soup till it was coming out of my ears and my dreams.. Oh Lordy, it was the silliest dream... seeing all that soup outside of the barn doors!!LOL... I had it several time over about a months period of time!

I think my craziest dream was when my co-worker and I had a business together and someone handed me a briefcase as we were walking towards the underground train. The case held one million dollars and we walked through a door and walked into our offices...we went back out and we were in Turkey. We walked back in the door and we were back at our office and we went back out and we were in a different country...

I remember I read it somewhere that dreams usually last for 15-20 secs
but what neilep said made more sense, as REM can last as long as 90 mins or thereabouts.
Are there any specific types of food that made us dream ? and do dreams vary with different foods ? I heard that you shouldnt have cheese for dinner, as it might cause sleep apnea / nightmares ...

Ema, I thought I had read something on that amount of time too....I understand what Neilep said...but it is funny that we only remember a portion of the dream? I eat alot of cheese...but not sure about nightmares...what little sleep I get, I very seldom dream at all. I can't remember the last nightmare I had...?

It depends whether it is a wet or a dry one. Anything less than 20 secs is akin to a damp squib.
