A great week for astronomy

Three significant events in the field of astronomy have taken place this week, firstly the successful launch of the Planck and Hershel telescopes by ESA and secondly the much delayed and nearly cancelled refurbishment of the Hubble telescope is at last underway.
It was considered a big gamble to launch both Planck and Hershel on the one Ariane rocket that does not have a 100% record of successful launches but in the event it paid off.
