Title: House pets
Post by: JimBob on 16/11/2007 23:16:55
Let us consider a possibility -

I MAY get a house pet in the near future. I have had cats, whih need less upkeep, and a dogs which require more of me which is OK. I must tell you I have no fences where I live so they will not be outside animals - Oh, The cat can go out during the day if it so wishes - I always want the best for my animals.

BUT - if I get a dog I do not know what to do. I had two bird dogs last a German Short Haired pointer and a Vizsla, really a versatile hunter - bird or fur equally well. (I have not hunted since I was young and no longer really believe in it but that is another topic.)  Hunters are not suited for inside dogs.

The question is, for a house dog, if I decide to go that way, WHAT should I get? I do not want a yappy little puff dog, but something like a smallish terrier, or a spaniel? I don't want a complete lap dog - an Aussie Shepard or Border Collie size is just right. But these dogs need a lot of stimulaton. AN apartment, even 900 sq ft of one, doesn't offer this as it is really needed.

I DO plan on adopting an older dog, not a puppy.

Any comments? Or should I put up with the cat box?

English Bulldogs are ideal apartment dogs. They realy don't bark. Don't like long walks (they have weak lungs and bad hips). And generally, if trained properly arent destructive.

Most dogs over here (and a lot of people really tend towards cats here for the very reasons you give) are regularly taken for walks, but do not live outside.  Are you ok, with walking dogs, or is that a problem (for many people, one of the advantages to them to buy a dog is it forces them to go out for walks twice a day, so keeps them fit).

Ofcourse, the breeds of dogs we have are not generally hunters, which do require far more exercise, and cannot really be cooped up in a house.

I am not a pet person at all, but looking out on the street, most of the dogs are either small lap dogs, or more docile breeds such as spaniels, collies, or labradors, or alike.

Jimbob You need to get an older boston terrier they are wonderful dogs loyal obedient when you train them and they are eager to please you and learn well. When young are high energy but that mellows so an older dog not a skinny whinpy boston you want one with a stout nive build they are perfect pets for apartment living. occasional tug a war is loved and they are very friendly and seldom are yappers.. Our dog never barked! we heard him bark maybe a few times in the coarse of his life... some will, but on the whole they were pretty quiet very expressive faces and a simple scolding is enough to make them feel sad when they have misbehaved.. They are sensitive and easily trained.. I love them and would have another one day!

Don't know about sheep being kept indoors (they rather like grass), but pigs have been kept as domestic pets.

No, I am just thinking about it. Not going to act for a while. Just thought I would get a few opinions before jumping into the stream.
