LeKaren Lockridge asked the Naked Scientists:
My laptop's fan has started making a loud noise after I have been on it awhile and the bottom of the computer is very hot. Is the fan starting to go out and should I replace it? I have worked on other computer laptops before and have no problem doing this and have invested in static pads and the proper type of tools.
What do you think?

Ha, sounds like what I had! [:D]

Dust.
My old laptop got very hot and loud when the fan got encased with dust. So i took the back off and used one of those air dusters to take all the dust of the fan and a big chunk of it in the vents.

I have a macbook pro and the fan has become quite noisy on that; it also runs (and always has done) hot enough to cook an egg on the front panel. Does anyone know how to check or clean the fan on these computers?

Is it the unibody aluminum macbook pro? if is then its probably going to be harder to open up.

Bear in mind that the heat sink compound between the processor and its cooling device can deteriorate and should be replaced when you do this service (not too thick !).

Replacing the heat sink compound isn't hard, its pretty cheap too. Im still thinking that its dust that makes the fans louder.
