Title: Can A Smell Knock You Out !! ?
Post by: neilep on 18/09/2006 20:56:49: Dearest Naked Science Bods With faster Internet Connects Than Myself !!

I know there are instances when sounds of a specific frequency can make you pass out yes ?...is there an equivalent aroma using the olfactory senses ?...I don't mean anything poisonous but a smell that is so grotesque that you pass out ?......well..I am not saying that passing out is good for you but besides knocking you out, it won't do any other harm ?

Then as I'm driving through town (the oyster capital of the USA) I got a whiff of rotting oyster shells. That, combined with son's b.o. nearly made me pass out. It took everything I had to stay conscious.

What he discribed I believe is Senseory Overload, the sound thing. I think that a strong or bad enough smell could cause someone to pass out, I've heard of people passing out from skunk spray.

Post by: Make it Lady on 17/01/2009 17:46:40: Isn't there a plant that gives off a smell of rotting flesh to attract flies, that it later eats? I hear that the smell is so rank that it makes people puke. I think if you were dropped into an area full of these you would probably pass out.
