Title: Computer engineers wanted. Please respond
Post by: sithcdw on 04/01/2011 00:58:44
Hello I am currently enrolled in Olympic high school and as a graduation requirement I am doing research into a career path of my choosing. I was hoping to interview some computer engineers via email but have had little success, please if you or someone you know is a computer engineer please your help is greatly appreciated. I would need very basic personnel information: Name, work, email.
Thank you.

I'm not a computer engineer, but I'd suggest you should be a bit careful introducing yourself as a highschool student and then asking people to give you their e-mail address so that (presumably) you can get into an e-mail conversation with them.

There's a (very) small risk you might attract the attention of The Wrong Kind of Person.

I'd suggest if anyone gets back to you that you interview them using the private message facility on the forum, or something similar, so that you're properly anonymised to them. (And for goodness sake don't give anyone your real name or physical address/telephone number... I'm sure you know better, but I'd rather have said it just incase).

Incidentally, I'm sure any computer engineers out there aren't daft enough to put their e-mail in the open forum, but just incase... I wouldn't do it, people, this site has a ridiculously high google ranking and you'll be picked up for spamming in seconds. If you want to help I'd suggest dropping sithcdw a PM.

A good job that email address is "temporary" Sithcdw because by putting it in a public forum it's going to recieve an avalanche of spam ...

E-mail address harvesting

Another common method is the use of special software known as "harvesting bots" or "harvesters", which spider Web pages, postings on Usenet, mailing list archives, internet forums and other online sources to obtain e-mail addresses from public data.

If I were you I'd delete that email address and just ask anyone interested to send you a personal message (PM) via this forum. If you must post an email address in a public forum disguise it so the spambots don't recognise it ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Address_munging

it's going to recieve an avalanche of spam ...

I wonder if that would be the same as a spamalanche? Either way, it's a terrifying prospect.
