Title: Are all types of jellyfish venemous?
Post by: rosalind dna on 18/08/2008 16:04:33
I have heard a lot about poisonous jellyfish on the UK's coastal shores mainly recently but as the Gulf
Stream might be behind it all as this link/story says:

But are all the different types of Jellyfish Poisonous?

If there are some non-toxic jellyfish, what type are they? Also what part of the world do they mainly live?

There are non poisonous jellyfish.. (eg they will sting, but not kill) here in Australia we are surrounded by them (all types).
Generally speaking though, jellyfish without colour are ok.. unless you are swimming along the north coast of Australia, in which case the iracongi (irukundji) which are small and colourless and extremely deadly may be lurking.

Unfortunately, not even the ever present great white Australian sharks will combat the little irunkundji so it's best to just stick to waters where the great whites play (eg the rest of Australia)

Red back, funnel web, blue ringed octopus
Taipan, Tiger snake, Adderbox and Jellyfish
stone fish and the poison thing that lives in a shell, that spikes you when you pick it up

Come to Australia
You might accidentally get killed

Your lifes constantly under threat
Have you been bitten yet?
You've only got 3 minutes left
Before a massive coronary breakdown

Red back, funnel web, blue ringed octopus
Taipan, Tiger snake, Adderbox and Jellyfish
Big shark, just waiting for you to go swimming
At Bondi Beach

Come on

Come to Australia
You might accidentally get killed
Your blood is bound to be spilled
With fear your pants will be
Filled
Because you might accidentally get killed

JnA thanks and that's interesting

What about around the UK also other parts of Europe and USA also the rest of the world, e.g Asia.

How many other types of non-poisonous and poisonous jellyfish?

Hi Rosalind!

In fact, every jellyfish is poisonous! It just depents on what animal you are, if it is dangerous for you.
A lot of jellyfish are not really dangerous for human beings...just because the cells with inject the poison (what are they called in english?) are not able to penetrate the human skin.
But also a lot of them are...they lead to burns on the skin and allergic reactions... but most of the victims, which die after the contact with a jellyfish wont die because of the poision, but will drown, because the pain causes shocks, convulsions, heart attacks...
But some jellyfish really deadly poisionous...the box jellyfish of australia for example could be...

ok, you are correct. Please add "to humans' to the end of my post.

Rosalind, unfortunately I don't know much about the jellyfish that live in other parts of the world. Just the Australian ones... sorry.

JnA that's fine also I had sort of "edited" in the word humans.
I have learnt how to avoid jellyfish. Not that they come up
the River Thames often.

Jonrio I wouldn't have recommended that idea unless you want a painful death not Rosalind.

the irikanji and box jellyfish - yes very dangerous to pick up... though on the up side, you probably won't have to wait long until the pain disappears (along with consciousness)
As a child though, we used to have jellyfish fights with the ones that don't kill you, but can sting.. the skill was to get you target without getting stung yourself. ahh childhood, such a happy, nonlitigious time ...

JnA what about the other children, involved in the jellyfish
games. Cruelty in kids is not the same awww.

I have seen Man of War on the beach in my childhood and nearly trod on it. But luckily my parents warned me not too.

There was an enclosed island in Palau, which had a species of non-poisonous jellyfish which had a symbiotic relation with algae.

Unfortunately, I understand that this tiny ecosystem has subsequently collapsed, and they are now extinct :(

I would think that there are other hazards to swimming in the Thames...

Actually, the jellyfish lake has recovered somewhat, and is now open again.

I apologise, but it not absolutely that is necessary for me. There are other variants?
