Title: Why are collagen supplements making me sleepy?
Post by: Jackie284 on 20/08/2007 11:11:39
Hi everyone,

I was hoping someone might be able to shed some light on the side effects I experience from collagen supplementation. It mainly effects my sleep patterns, in that I sleep much heavier and remain feeling and looking tired for most of the day. Aswell as this, my night time tooth grinding becomes worse, i think because I'm sleeping heavier. Does anyone know why this might be, and if there is anything I can do to allieviate this ?
many many thanks
Jackie x

grinding teeth and such can be associated with sleep apnea.. I am no doctor but suggest you talk to a doctor about your new symptoms and I am assuming they came on only after the collagen injections I am assuming?

Perhaps the injections have blocked part of your sinus airway!

Welcome to the forum and give some times for more qualified answers to your problem.

Hi Karen,

thanks for your reply. The collagen i'm taking is in powder form as a vitamin supplement. The tooth grinding I have had for years and is tension related, but just seems to worsen whenever I sleep really heavy,
thanks again,

Sorry it is frustrating to have things like that happen. You should check with a sleep center as there are many forms of problems that prevent restful sleep. You may be sleeping but for whatever reason it may not be the right type of sleep to allow you to feel refreshed... All of your symptoms are familiar to me.. I just had two sleep studies and their is some else in the forum who has been through three I think!

The video you are required to read before they hook up goes through many different reasons for non-restful unsatisfying sleep! I did not know I had it until then I know I have bad insomnia but this should help some..
You should check it out!

I did not know one could take collagen in a powder form. Thanks I learn something new every day! Good luck!

Hi Jackie284,

are you eating COLLAGEN for any particular reason?
I never tasted it and I feel good anyway.
(me prefer garlic bread!)
Cheers,

Collagen is a protein and as such, when digested, becomes the precursor to other proteins and amines. I haven't the foggiest what it becomes but perhaps more connective tissue (that is what it is) and other proteins Many proteins affect brain function but passing the blood-brain barrier is a hard process for anything in the body. Is there a physiologist or a doctor in the house? Micky, Chris?

Hi

I'm not sure why you're experiencing these effects as collagen is usually pretty inert and hasn't been shown to cause significant side effects such as this.

There are actually several types of collagen that effect different parts of the body (the most common being typr 2 for joints and connective tissue).

I've never come across it in powder form before and would think this is not the most pleasant way to ingest it.

I'm closing in on 50 and just wanted to stop having to scrape my face out of the sink every morning so started taking collagen capsules which I got from a website (http://www.spam.co.uk).

I take 2 capsules 30 mins before bed, drink plenty of water and have been pleased with the results. I'm firmer, feel much healthier and my joints are much more supple (an unexpected effect).

I can honestly say I haven't experienced any negative side effects and have been taking collagen for about 8 months now.

I'd personally re-look at what you are actually taking. Do you have an ingredients list.

Hope this helps.

Collagen is a common connective tissue protein. You eat bucket loads of the stuff every time you chew on a pork chop or even a cheeseburger. As other posters have alluded to, when you eat it the digestive process dismantles the protein to its component amino acid parts, which are absorbed in the small bowel and transmitted to the liver where they are used for metabolism or sent to other organs for anabolic process, like tissue regeneration, repair and growth. There is no reason why eating collagen, per-se, should have any health impact over and above that of the food that contains it.

If you are asking about collagen injections for things like anti-ageing and anti-wrinkle purposes, that's a different matter. I'm not sure what collagen mixtures are currently being used but I have a vague idea that animal proteins are used; regardless of the source I suppose there's a small risk of allergy or immune response to the preparations, which might be producing cytokines that are having these fatiguing effects. This is purely speculation on my part, however.
