What causes blepharitis?

Eileen asked the Naked Scientists:
Hello Chris
I listen to your porgramme on Radio 702 every Friday, which I thoroughly enjoy, but have been unable to get through by phone as I guess the lines are very busy.
Please can you help me?
I have been diagnosed with an eye problem called Blepharitis, which I am told is made up of mites etc., which to me sounds horrific! How does one get such a thing?
Question is, how do you treat this problem as it is very irritating. I have been putting 20% Tea Tree Oil on my eyelids, but unfortunately this procedure makes my eyes sting for ages.Â
Do you have any answers?
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Regards,  Â
Eileen Ellis
