Title: Back Injury & working out

Nearly 2 weeks ago, at work I injured my back, by repeatitive lifting and twisting, I was diagnosed with 2 slipped discs and a pinched nerve which is causing unreal grief to my right leg.

I have always been healthy, worked out 3-4 times a week, and now this!  my muscles have gone completley relaxed and I am freaking out, what excercise can I do without causing anymore stress and grief to my lower back???

Will I ever get back to normal, or will I suffer with lower back pains for the rest of my life???

Now is not the time to be lifting weights, unless you'd like to have surgery.  The best exercises would be stretching type exercises that might create some space for those discs.  Once injured, it is more prone to reinjury.  Some instruction on body mechanics would be good to prevent it in the future.  The irritation is two fold -- partly caused by swelling, and partly caused by the jelly like substance, nucleus pulposis, which is inside the disc and herniated out, that has chemicals in it that irritate the nerve.  With conservative treatment, the swelling and extruded material should resorb in the body and the pain subside.  But after that, you still have to be careful how you use your back.  The muscle tone will return quickly when you start working out normally again.  Don't freak out about that.  I find people who are toned to start with regain their tone much faster.

I sympathise with your predicament.

Can you clarify one potentially important point for me. When you say your muscles have "gone completely relaxed" do you mean that you have weakness in your leg ? Is this new i.e. has this evolved since the injury ? Is the weakness confined to just one side, or are both legs affected ? Also, have you had any bladder or bowel problems, including incontinence ?

I'm worried that there may be significant nerve impingement. Have you seen a doctor recently about this ?

Thanks for your input.
Bezoar, I know that I shouldn't be lifting heavy weights ie. barbell and dumbell heavy compound lifting I was just wondering if anyone had used machine or cable exercises to train without irratating their back.  I am puzzled why this injury has happened to me, I have used wieghts for trainning since my teens, never had a injury, my back was one of my strongest muscle parts, now I can't even bend forward and touch my toes.

Every morning and evening I lay on my front and do strecthing exercises, and all this week I have been in Therapy, but at work when standing or even washing the dishes, my right leg has really bad shooting pains, bad enough to put me on my knees.

What I mean by the muscles are, my chest, arms, quads etc, just feel like jelly, I don't think I have ever gone more than a week without doing some sort of exercise, I just don't think I can go another week or two, just sitting and laying around, for those that weight train, it feels like all those gains of years of trainning are going down the plug hole!
I have no trouble with my bladder or bowl movements, just sharp pains in my right hamstring and calf.

I have just finished a dose of steroids (not the anabolic ones)for the inflamination and have only a few pain killers left.

do I just sit it out and wait or is there anything else I can do?

Jeez, indoroids, you want DMP30 to take anabolics so he can keep working out?  What are you trying to do to him?  Send him to the OR and shrink his testicles all at the same time?  Hey, DMP, my guess would be the herniation was probably caused by twisting and lifting simultaneously.  That's way more stressful than just lifting with a straight back.  In the meanwhile, stay off the anabolics and let your body heal.  Conservative treatment is the way to go, unless you can't stand the pain any longer.  Then restart exercises gradually, AFTER instruction on body mechanics.  If you don't listen to your body and let it heal, it will put you "flat on your back" on an operating table.  A nerve block might help the pain, but any doctor with a conscience won't do it for you just to allow you to get back to the gym and reinjure yourself.
