Post by: hoodia123 on 28/06/2010 09:30:18
Hi guys,

I am intrested in trying hoodia as a weight loss technique, I'm just not sure on how safe it is, and what's in it, and how much safer it is compared to non-herbal remidies.

I weigh 19st and am very eagar to find an easy solution to help me lose weight, obviously combined with exersise.

Thanks Guys.

I am no expert on Hoodia or whether it works or not for people, but usually these sorts of products translate into dramatic weight loss for your wallet; there's really no quick-fix substitute for diet and exercise.

It is a fruit of a plant, and like any thing you eat can be either good or bad for you. Cut down on the MickyD and stop drinking carbonated drinks, that will make the biggest difference.

I'm already on a balanced diet, i'm just trying to find something that may aid it, I don't eat junk food any more and I go for an hour morning jog before work, I was just interested to know if I could get quicker results with this, if I used hoodia in combination with exercise and good eating?

Can't do any harm to try it I suppose...but...if you are already losing weight then let it come off gradually....

In a Hoodia cactus episode, proper use was demonstrated by a tribesman cutting off about a 2" long piece of cactus, about 1" diameter, and eating it.   He said, eating about that much [depending on size of person], would dull the appetite for about 24 hours, so people could be more comfortable during periods of low food supply, or hunters on low rations.
MY concern:
OK, so it fools the body into thinking it just ate, by mimicking a bit of chemistry feed-back loop to the brain--THAT fails to tell us anything really salient.
IF that brain chemistry trick includes slowing metabolic rates, then it would work against weight loss.
This sort of presentation has happened in the past, for instance, the marketing of Saw Palmetto to grow larger breasts: unfortunately, the chemistry mechanism that "grows larger breasts" also, as old herbals state, "packs flesh on"; it is used in cases of wasting diseases to help the body keep more flesh on it [ie., adding generalized fat and muscle]!
THEREFORE, the question yet to be answered clearly is:
?--DOES HOODIA -SLOW/speed/keep the same- METABOLIC RATES?--?
If it slows metabolic rates, it would be counter-productive/destructive for dieters.
BUT, slowing metabolism may be very useful for slowing starvation of millions of people world-wide experiencing food shortages!
Perhaps Hoodia is being target-marketed to the wrong audience?

Hmm this is very intresting, so your saying that hoodia is still in the experimental stages, i thought everything there was to know about hoodia was already understood.

Gimme a frikkin' brek! It's utter bollocks!

It's only motivated by those who seek personal profit in exchange for doing bugger all.

Show me some actual science, and I might soften my position.

The Hoodia spp has been well known by the indigenous South African population for treating indigestion and small infections and the plant was used for centuries to suppress appetites during long hunting trips. The appetite suppressing ingredient has been isolated and the product CITES certified and patented. Hoodia Gordonii is bought direct from South African farms to ensure only the purest of ingredients are used and the use of the suppliment has help many people to successfully lose weight. To paraphrase the immortal Wilkins Micawber...

"Ah yes, my young friend. Daily Calories in 2400 -Daily Calories burned 2400 - happiness.
Daily Calories in 2500 - Daily Calories burned 2400- next stop blimp city!"

That's how God made the universe and "hoodia" won't change that. Not even juju.

You had better hope that these hucksters are only selling you something innocuous and useless instead of lacing it with some stimluant like amphetamine. You have no guarantee of what's in it except for their word as an African street corner nostrum peddler. The law protects the innocent, but gullible suckers looking for shortcuts are fair game for the coyotes.

And now the God's of the copybook headings limp up once again to tell us, "If you want to lose weight (and at 19 stone that sounds well-considered) go and ask your MD for his advice on how to do it"

Good luck and don't be a chump..
