Docx to Doc

Recently I bought a new computer with Windows 7.
I do some typing for our church so had to buy the part Office package with Word 2010 as the computer didn't have Word on. Trouble is, if I type a fresh document, which comes out as Docx our Vicar and Parish Magazine Editor cannot open my documents. I believe they have XP or earlier. Is there software which I can use to convert files which I send in order they are compatible with older systems? I know there is software which a user of an older system can use to convert an incoming file from a newer system but this isn't really what I want.

You should be able to save as a .doc - and I think you can set the default to save as .doc or .rtf or .wtf The default is .docx - but just click the down arrow and chose a different file type on the save file dialog box
There is a microsoft add-on for old windows to open .docx search the MS site

I've not used windows 7, but I'd be quite surprised if Word 2010 doesn't have an option when you save a document to select .doc format instead of .docx
I think this suggests that, as with older versions of word, all you have to do is click on "save as", find the box where you can select the file type, and select .doc from the list instead of .docx

(Of course, you may already have tried that.. in which case someone who's actually seen the software you're trying to use will need to give you a better answer...)

Ah yes! Sounds like MS is up to their old "revenue enhancement" tricks. I'm pretty sure Matt and Rosy are right in that you can "save as" a .doc file. You'd think the program might allow you to set that as the default file type, but MS hopes people will start sending each other files in the new format so that everyone has to upgrade to the new software.
This used to drive me bonkers at work when somebody (usually in marketing [
]) started sending documents in the new file format around the company. The entire company was then forced to upgrade to the latest version, and MS got a big fat cheque for all the licenses.
One alternative is for you and your vicar to use the OpenOffice word processor. It has it's own format too, but it also allows you to save files as .doc . However, the best thing about it is that it's free!
Another way to go is to use Google Docs. It's free too, and, if I have it right, you don't even need to download any programs to your computer. I have not tried it myself, but I have a suspicion things are heading that way.

I use Openoffice, and avoid all the MS Headaches
However, there is also a
Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack
:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/support/microsoft-office-compatibility-pack-for-word-excel-and-powerpoint-2007-file-formats-HA010168676.aspx
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=941b3470-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&displaylang=en&pf=true
Install this on the computers with the OLD version of MS Office, and it should allow them to read the NEW file formats.
