Title: What causes hail?

What causes hail? does it stay in the atmosphere? can it cause damage to the aeroplane?

While water is in the clouds up in the sky, cold temperatures freeze it as it's coming down and somehow small amounts of sodium enter the piece of water as it freezes, and it comes down.
