This is an evolutionarily parallel branch to the 'chicken-egg' question, isn't it?

Oh why did I have to respond to the pun?  Why couldn't I just leaf it be?

I must say, your forest looks rather inviting, apart from all the sheep. You'd have to be careful, walking through there, not to get something undesirable on your shoes.

The forest may have begun to grow from seeds brought to the area in bird droppings. Of course it could also be the remnants of a much larger forest which has been cut down by these types (http://vodpod.com/watch/6631-monty-python-the-lumberjack-song)

And forest do not grow to all directions at the same rate.
Generally every area on the planet has a prevailing wind direction. The forest will spread further down wind. You also might have a forest against a mountain slope, so growth in that direction will be slower, etc etc..
