Title: What Voice Do You Hear When Thinking ?
Post by: neilep on 03/05/2008 13:17:30
Inspired by Pauls thread here (http://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/index.php?topic=14276.0;topicseen)

I'm just curious to know that when you are thinking , which voice do you perceive the thought as ?

Is it your own ?..a neutral voice ?
if you'r a girly is it a girlys voice ?...and vice verca ?

What about people who have been deaf since birth ?

I think I perceive my own voice but ....I really am not too sure.

What about you ? and do you have any thoughts on the matter ?

Why have a voice at all?

Some people may feel they need to translate thought to aural language, but I would imagine other people will think in visual terms, and have no voice whatsoever.

I have never had a voice associated with thought (except when it is in effect a conversation with myself - but even then, it is not a voice as such, merely disembodied  aural language).  Far more commonly thought will be associated with visual imagery that has no aural component at all.

Well why not have a voice ?

As I read your post George I am sure that what i am reading is being perceived....in my mind.....as a voice.

I agree that there are savants that can look at a whole page with a blink of their eye and digest it but ...even as I type this I am registering it as what appears to be an audible sound. Though, I know there is no sound there.

But as you read my post, you are reading language in serial form, so it makes sense to interpret it in aural form (even though I would still hesitate to place a specific timbre on that voice).

But if I am imagining the airflow over an aerofoil, it would not make any sense to think of that in serial linguistic terms, so it would not make sense imagine a voice trying to describe it.

In computer programming, one has both aspects of thinking.  One has to view the overall structure of the program, and one would not think of that in serial terms, so thinking of it in pictorial terms makes more sense.  Then, ultimately, one needs to translate that structure into linguistic terms (albeit in computer language terms, but it still requires serialisation).

Thanks George,

All I can say is that in MY mind...I do perceive a voice......clearly it's imaginary but it is there.

the same thing when it comes to imagining any other sound.......i can " hear " it !!....I can !

Perhaps I may be adding a human equation to my thoughts as an aid....but to all intents and purposes.....the sounds I perceive ...though not bona fide sounds ...to me exist.

Me too; I hear a voice when reading and, in order to learn something like a formula or a new foreign word, I have to 'hear it'. Sometimes I will struggle to remember a 'byte' but once I hear someone else deliver it as a 'sound byte', it sticks in my mind.
All the mnemonics which help us to remember i before e and pi to lots of sig figs seems to work on the sound. My voice, usually, unless there is a strong regional accent involved when I heard it first. For me, at least. Strange, really, as I have a well developed spacial sense and I'm not aware of a voice when working out topological problems.

I hear my own  vocal inflections, the way I am perceiving the thoughts in my head and my brain retrieves those thoughts in a familiar memory of my own voice..its kinda weird its like I am inside but using a method of virtual reality to allow my voice to exit the whole at a slightly delayed speed from what I call my mouth! LOL LOL!
