For a mass of any size greater than or equal to the Planck mass that is contained within its own Schwarzschild radius the properties at the event horizon should be equivalent. So that properties such as escape velocity and gravitational acceleration will not vary with a change in the size of mass.

The photon sphere, rather than the event horizon, should be the surface at which pair production should occur as in Hawking radiation. If a bias were to exist so that only matter particles fell towards the horizon while antimatter escaped then black holes would expand instead of evaporate. Matter outside the horizon would be annihilated so that even after heat death black holes would still be accumulating mass. Eventually all available mass would be contained within black holes. Any further pair production would not be possible without perturbations disrupting equilibrium and initiating another big bang.

To understand why the photon sphere is important we need to understand the trans-Planckian problem.

It could be that universes oscillate between those of matter and anti-matter. Since the initiation of a big bang would be an excess of particles exterior to the horizon with no annihilation parters. This initial excess would then determine which matter type prevailed once expansion was triggered.
