Roger Bannister was the first 4 minute mile runner; but since he achieved this feat many many people have routinely managed it. We're not evolving this fast, so what's the reason for the apparent, relentless improve in athletic performance?

Better training, more awareness of human physiology, equipment to help performance. Better nutritional awareness. More drive perhaps (better incentives)

Fewer distractions - I remember when the majority of track and field athletes remained amateur in order to compete in the Olympics.
